the Engineering Council of UK in 2001. He has been a Fellow of the Water Institute of South Africa (WISA), a Fellow of the South African Institute of Civil Engineers (SAICE) and a member of the Chartered Institution of Water & Environ- mental Managers. His career began at the City Engineers Department in the Durban Corporation, now referred to as the eThekwini Mu- nicipality, where he worked as a Design Engineer and Construction Supervisor on various reservoirs, trunk mains and pump- stations. Subsequent to this, he moved to the UK for two years where he worked for Sir William Halcrow and Partners as an Assistant Engineer for the investigations of the Craig Goch Dam located in Wales. Upon his return to South Africa in 1975 Graham joined Campbell, Bernstein & Irving Consulting Engineers, commonly referred to as CBI Consulting Engineers, as a young engineer, quickly progressing to associate position and, in 1986, be- came a partner at the firm. He served as a technical director of the Water Division for many years and continued this role after the merger of CBI and PD Naidoo & Associates. He then continued his journey

with the company after the subsequent merger of PD Naidoo and Associates with Mott MacDonald Africa. He now serves as an independent consultant to Mott MacDonald Africa following his retirement in 2016. His notable work in the supply of water to various communities began as early as 1975. Graham has served as a reviewer on ECSA’s panel of reviewers to potential candidates for many years. This he sees as one of the highlights of his career as he has been able to guide young engineers aspiring to professional registration, ulti- mately leading them to their goal of being professionally registered. Graham is a member of MENSA and enjoys a diverse range of hobbies such as playing bridge (he is a member of the South African Bridge Federation and KZN Bridge Union), bird watching and attend- ing plays at the theatre. He has a love for Engineering, and has made a significant contribution to the upliftment of many lives, especially in the rural communities. He exudes a passion that entices not only aspiring engineers but all who come across his path to love and cherish the engineering profession. z

GRAHAM BURROWS

G raham Burrows has ap- proximately 48 years of experience in both design and project management, primarily in water related projects within South Africa. He has sub- stantial experience in river abstraction, treatment works, pumpstations, pipelines, reservoirs, and general bulk infrastructure in the public and private sectors. He is a widely renowned specialist in water and sewer pump design and analysis. His career has provided a hugely positive impact on the majority of KwaZulu-Natal’s water supply schemes, being responsible for the upliftment of impoverished communities and providing his expertise to numerous municipalities. Graham graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Natal, in 1969. He registered as a Professional Engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) in 1973 and was further registered as a Chartered Engineer with
