KEY TALKING POINTS

Dr. Metodi Zlatev, head of Sales and Projects at Haver Boecker: “The quality of deposits is decreasing and therefore a major effort in processing is particularly necessary. In turn, more and more operations are seeking washing equipment to stay profit- able as it allows them to clean that unusable material, thereby producing a sellable product and staying profitable.”

JD Singleton, Process Director – Weir Minerals: “One of the major drivers behind the trend towards wet processing in quarrying is that the construction industry requires high quality building sand, and that can only be produced by high efficiency wet sand wash systems. High quality sand results in superior roads and buildings.”

QUICK TAKE

Weir Minerals sand plants are custom solutions built to deliver superior wash quality and maximise productivity.

deposits is decreasing and therefore a major effort in processing is particularly necessary. He reasons that, in turn, more and more op- erations are seeking washing equipment to stay profitable as it allows them to clean that unusable material, thereby producing a sell- able product and staying profitable. “Recycling demolition waste is also be- coming a major issue in some countries, es- pecially in large urban areas where, because of distance, it’s costly to transport material to natural aggregates landfills. With washing equipment, however, demolition contractors can clean material, then reuse it in concrete applications, saving considerable money,” he reasons. Weir’s cutting edge tech Singleton says that the heart of the sand washing process is the hydrocyclone, commonly referred to as a cyclone, which removes the slimes fraction and places the material within specification. To optimise the application and performance of the cyclone, Weir Minerals has a team of process engineers that specialise in the installation and operation of classification cyclones. These engineers are able to assist customers by assessing individual applications and specific cyclone needs. “It is important to know that we specify cyclones per duty, not from a brochure. Weir Minerals also partners with thickener and fil- ter suppliers to provide a one-stop shop for sand producers. The option also exists to ret- rofit into the clients’ existing infrastructure,

or to supply compact sand washing plants to add onto existing crushing and screening plants,” says Singleton. “Because Weir Minerals is the OEM of Cavex hydrocyclones and Warman centrifu- gal pumps, the plant efficiency and mainte- nance are controlled in-house and the exten- sive local and global product, maintenance and applications knowledge is available as support to our customers. Weir Minerals also produces all the sand washing systems and products used in sand washing systems in Africa, for Africa.” Singleton explains that Weir Minerals’ Cavex hydrocyclone contains the innovative laminar spiral design feed chamber to reduce turbulence in the feed chamber, and provide a superior cut point (efficiency) as well as in- creased capacity. “We are able to feed the Cavex hydrocyclones with our new genera- tion Warman centrifugal slurry pumps from either our WBH or SLR pump ranges, depend-

ing on feed density,” he says. Both the SLR and WBH pump ranges are designed to reduce wear, energy consump- tion and maintenance time with replaceable wear liners, and deliver increased hydrau- lic capacity. The Cavex hydrocyclone is fed through Linatex hoses that are proven to be durable and long lasting, and the underflow of the Cavex hydrocyclone discharges on high efficiency, high capacity, low-headroom Enduron dewatering screens that are de- signed to operate at reduced operating and maintenance costs. Hydro-Clean washes in To meet the growing need for innovative washing solutions globally, Haver & Boecker designed its Hydro-Clean Washing System with 2 000-psi high-pressure water jets to effectively remove dirt and clay from aggregates and run-of-mine material while minimising water and energy consumption.
