RIGID DUMP TRUCKS

With Trolley Assist, onboard pantographs connect the truck’s drive system to overhead power lines on uphill haulage segments.

Diesel-electric technology on dump trucks: the way forward? In the quest for zero-emission mine sites, reduced carbon footprints and improved margins through fuel conservation, dump truck owners are on the lookout for alternative ways to power their equipment, prompting Liebherr and other OEMs to introduce diesel-electric technology on their trucks. By Mark Botha .

A recent study by Interact Analysis on the global off- highway vehicle market, including the market for diesel-electric haulers and dump trucks over 85 tonne (t) capacity, has found that the 1 330 diesel-electric haulers and dump trucks delivered in 2020 will increase to some 1 545 units this year, and rise to a total of 1 783 units sold annually by 2029. Liebherr-Africa mining director Tom Munch says the growing interest in diesel- electric technology in rigid dump trucks is driven in part by the need to reduce CO 2 in mining. “As mining customers around the world show greater interest in reducing CO 2 emissions, innovative solutions such as electrical drive systems will be
