RIGID DUMP TRUCKS
With this system, onboard pantographs connect the truck’s drive system to overhead power lines on uphill haulage segments to translate the full power capacity of the electric wheel motors into speed on grade while the diesel engine idles. In 2013, Liebherr received an initial request from Canadian mining and metals company First Quantum Minerals Limited (FQML) for a 360 t trolley-capable haul truck for use at a future mine site in Panama. The truck would be required to integrate with the trolley power line that FQML had designed and developed for the site. Agreeing to this partnership, two Liebherr T 284 trucks were commissioned, tested, calibrated, verified, and evaluated in Zambia. “The trial period was determined a success, leading to an official order for 30 more trolley-assisted trucks for what is today the world’s largest copper mine, FQML’s Cobre Panama in central South America.” The trial was in fact so successful that the customer ordered six additional trolley-capable RDTs for the Sentinel Mine in Zambia, bringing the total number of T 284 trucks running on the Liebherr Trolley Assist System to 38. development contract for a trolley assist system for the VA Erzberg iron ore mine at Eisenerz, Austria. “The T 236 uses the trolley system with its active front-end technology to reduce fuel consumption significantly while in trolley mode,” says Munch. “VA Erzberg anticipates a reduction in fleet fuel consumption of approximately 3-million l of diesel, as well as a reduction in annual carbon emissions of 4 200 t.” The future Munch says Liebherr strives for long-term sustainable solutions, and investigates different options focused on safety, cost, reliability, maintainability and flexibility. “We offer a full range of electric excavators, and the full mining truck product range will soon be trolley- capable. We have a clear vision and roadmap to achieve low fossil fuel solutions by 2022, and fossil fuel-free solutions for the majority of applications by 2030.” He says a study has found that the 1 330 diesel-electric haulers and dump trucks delivered in 2020 will increase to some 1 545 units this year, and rise to a total of 1 783 units sold annually by 2029. b T 236 Trolley Assist At bauma 2019, Liebherr signed a

electric off-highway trucks (OHTs), including the T 236, available with 100 t load capacity; the 240 t T 264; the T 274 (305 t) and the T 284, available in 375 t capacities. All of these are powered by the company’s proprietary Litronic Plus AC drive system. Trolley Assist “In order to reduce operating costs and carbon emissions even further, we offer the Trolley Assist system for our truck ranges,” says Munch “The Liebherr Trolley Assist system improves productivity, lowers fuel consumption and reduces emissions. This is the first step on the road to a zero-emission mine site.” The T 274 is based on the proven design of the Liebherr T 284, which has gained more than 20-million operating hours in the field. The frame and components are shared between both the T 284 and the T 274. Liebherr’s solid reputation as a reliable OEM stems from consistent development and production of high-quality mining components, products, and services. The T 274’s mining-optimised components are developed, manufactured, and controlled by Liebherr following the company’s vertical integration model to ensure top performance and reliability for the entire machine. Liebherr T 274 – the new 305 t mining truck Liebherr is extending its product offering with the T 274, a class-leading 305 t haul truck. The new truck bridges the gap between the highly successful T 284 (363 t) and the upgraded T 264 (240 t). Designed and adapted from years of experience in mining truck development, the T 274 is a true 305 t machine that provides fast cycle times, higher production rates, low fuel consumption and a low cost per tonne. The new truck follows the same base design as the T 284, benefitting from decades of field experience. The Liebherr T 274 is powered by the most powerful engine in its class at 3 650 hp, and the efficient Liebherr Litronic Plus AC Drive system. With the advanced hydraulic design and fast cycle times, the T 274 moves more material in less time. The new addition to Liebherr’s mining product range is said to offer a truck with the largest payload capacity in its class, moving more tonnes each hauling cycle. Speed on grade is a major contributor to fast cycle times. The Liebherr Litronic Plus AC Drive System improves cycle time efficiency by providing continuous uphill speed, differing from traditional mechanical drive trucks that require shifting of gears. Designed with safety in mind, the T 274 is equipped with 4 500 kW / 6 035 hp dynamic braking power to operate efficiently on downhill hauls. Pairing the Liebherr T 274 with the Liebherr R 9800 hydraulic excavator provides the customer with a highly versatile and productive fleet. The fast swing times of the R 9800 will load the T 274 with four bucket passes ensuring quick loading times that lead to high production rates of both the truck and excavator. The T 274 is also compatible with the brand new R 9600, the successor to the thoroughly proven and iconic R 996B.
