HYDRAULIC HAMMERS
“Our products cover the full scope of applications and industries, which ranges from the 55 kg SB 52 for bathroom tiles to the 10 t HB 10000 for enormous boulders.” The company’s range includes the premium SB (small breaker); the MB (medium breaker) and HB (heavy breaker) classes, all with multiple variants in each category. “We offer further specialisation within these ranges,” says Jackson. “An example is our SB Tunnelling range, where the breaker is designed for more continuous, upward and horizontal breaking in mining and tunnelling applications. The EC value range is for the cost-conscious customer who may not be breaking 24/7.” In terms of features on the SB range, its unique solid body is said to eliminate common parts and so provides high durability and a slim, compact design. This, he says, has many benefits, especially in applications where hot ambient conditions prevail. “We also offer the Intelligent Protection System (IPS) for controlling piston stroke for optimal protection and power at the appropriate time during the breaking process.” The EnergyRecovery system uses piston recoil energy to increase performance automatically and decrease vibration without additional hydraulic input. “Lubrication during operation is critical, so Epiroc helps to automate this with Contilube auto lubrication for the hammer, available across the premium range.” Tecman offers the TMB range, developed over the past 15 years for use in high- production mining. “All the hammers in this range, from 350 to 7 000 kg (for 3 – 100 t carriers) are designed to work on Tecman rock breaker boom systems, the majority of which work 24/7 in some of the world’s biggest mines,” says Bendall. He says the Tecman TMG Contracting range is built with simplicity, performance and price in mind: “We realise that, while everybody would prefer to have the best equipment, this ideal is unaffordable to many clients.” He says the Tecman Contracting range therefore has only two moving parts and is easy to repair. The build quality of the TMG contracting range is such that certain models were tested in the mining environment and are currently being used in Tecman’s rock breaker boom systems. Naidu says Doosan’s Montabert Variable and Heavy ranges hydraulic rock breakers are designed for all types of carrier, from 20 to 80 t. These breakers are equipped with an automatic pressure regulator to ensure optimal operation, regardless of variations in flow and/or temperature.
“Today’s OEMs that produce new generation skid steers and excavators are opting for electronically operated equipment.”
Vinesh Naidu, Montabert sales manager at Doosan SA
“It goes without saying that developments on the carrier side must be complemented by developments or improvements on the breaker.”
Robin Jackson, Partner Demolition and Drilling Equipment director, Epiroc
“Construction machinery is becoming larger and more automated, and breaker manufacturers are expanding their line-ups in the quest for increased tonnages.”
William Kang, sales manager at Disa Equipment
“Clean hydraulic oil and monitoring for excessive wear in the tool bushes are vital to prevent most hydraulic hammer failures.”
Darrell Bendall, CEO of Tecman South Africa
TALKING POINTS
through the hammer to the carrier machine’s structures and hydraulic system. “Being one of the world’s largest rock breaker boom manufacturers means we have in-depth knowledge of this problem. It can cause structural cracking and premature hydraulic component failure as the material is not being broken and the hammer’s blow
force is transferred back through the hammer to the machine, when the rock is not broken.” Product ranges Jackson says Epiroc patented the first breaker in 1963 and that the range has since grown extensively to become “probably the most complete range available”.
