Capital Equipment News March 2019

Rand-Air invests considerably to ensure that it always provides its customers with the very latest in technology. “The containerised system provides customers with a very compact and portable power footprint. In addition, the two generators inside the container can be synchronised, so that it is possible to supply either 1 100 kVA or 550 kVA. This is a potentially versatile cost-saving option for the customer,” explains Coetzee. In terms of new features, Rand-Air has introduced an updated controller so that its generators are able to communicate and operate synergistically in parallel or in series. This is particularly relevant to those with high amperage requirements, for example, running two 500 kVA in series to obtain a combined 1 000 kVA output. “In addition – and as an exceptionally useful accessory – the new units now feature a distribution board (DB) as an integral part of the generator trailer. Instead of having a separate stand-alone DB, this is now permanently mounted on the front of the machine, which gives Rand-Air’s customers a greater level of convenience,” explains Coetzee, adding that features such as the updated controller and generator-mounted DB bear testimony to the company’s continual investment in customising or modifying equipment to better serve the needs of its customers. More compressors Rand-Air has also added some 30 new compressors with sizes ranging between 260 and 700 cfm. The range has largely been added to satisfy current demand and to close some crucial gaps in the existing offering. “For example, we have brought in mostly the smaller compressors like the 260 cfm XA186. We have witnessed a high demand for these machines,” says Thorne. Oil-free compressors have always been a major area of focus for Rand-Air. “We have also added electric oil-free compressors to our fleet. A major talking point in that regard is the addition of the 800 cfm Atlas Copco PTS 800 compressor, as well as the electric oil-free ZT90 we have brought in,” adds Thorne. The 800 cfm PTS 800 is another innovative addition to Rand-Air’s offering. The company previously only had a 1 600 cfm offering. The PTS 800 delivers oil-free air at medium pressure at a lower airflow than the larger 1 600 cfm unit, allowing Rand-Air to offer a solution for applications that do not necessarily need the power of a larger unit. It also has a smaller build on a wheeled frame for improved mobility. As a bonus, it has an impressively small environmental footprint.

QUICK TAKE

52 NEW GENERATORS IN 2018

In order to address growing customer demand, Rand-Air added 52 new generators to its fleet in 2018

OVER 20 SMALL KVA’S AND 20 LIGHT SET

Further to that investment, Rand-Air has since added more than 40 new generators – over 20 small KVAs and 20 light set

260-700 CFM

Rand-Air has also added over 30 new compressors with sizes ranging between 260 and 700 cfm

20 TO 1 100 KVA

Rand-Air currently rents out generators with a size range from 20 to 1 100 kVA

190 TO 1 500 CFM

On the compressor rental side of the business, Rand-Air’s offering ranges from 190 to 1 500 cfm

factory. The four units are expected to arrive at the end of April this year. The Twin Power is said to be a first of its kind in the local rental market, delivering high performance, low cost of ownership and transport efficiency for customers. The 6-m containerised generator comes with two 500 kVA generators inside. It’s perfect for portable applications that require intensive use such as on civil, construction, government, industrial, mining and rental sites. “The greatest advantage that the QAC 1100 Twin Power generator will offer to Rand-Air customers is the two generators in one platform,” says Byrone Thorne, marketing manager at Rand-Air.
