Zyl, executive director: Daimler Trucks & Buses Southern Africa, believes the new FJ 16-230 will further unlock FUSO’s full potential in southern Africa. Naeem Hassim, head of FUSO Trucks Southern Africa, says, despite the current challenging economic conditions, FUSO Trucks is on a continued growth offensive in southern Africa. He notes that South Africa remains FUSO’s biggest market, but strong inroads are being made into Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi too. He believes that, besides the quality of the product, a key competitive edge of the brand is the strong aftersales service it enjoys by virtue of being part of the bigger Daimler Group. The group recently strengthened its drive for excellence and customer dedication with the expansion of its Regional Centre Southern Africa, the third of six regional cen- tres being opened for Daimler’s commercial vehicles globally. Based in Pretoria, South Africa, the centre serves nine countries in the region – South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mo- zambique, Malawi, Zambia, Lesotho and Swaziland. It caters for Daimler’s full port- folio of commercial vehicles including Mer- cedes Benz vans, buses and trucks; FUSO trucks and buses, as well as Freightliner and Western Star trucks. Van Zyl says the new centre means that Daimler can respond to its commercial vehi- cle customers and their requirements even faster. b

daily maintenance checks. The lid gives quick access to check the clutch fluid tank, radia- tor water level, engine oil level, windshield wash water tank and cabin air filter. Although the FJ 16-230’s design steers clear of excessive extra bells and whistles, it benefits from sound mechatronics, the suc- cessful combination of mechanical systems and electronics. These are enshrined in the intelligent instrument cluster with green band and trip mileage indicator. “Over and above the regular band in Tachometer, addi- tional green variable band guides the driver for most fuel efficient driving in all conditions

– right speed and right gear,” says Makitla. The Trip Mileage indicator indicates fuel mileage achieved for a certain trip. “It also has the facility to show for a certain ‘Round Tour’ of what was the trip in kilometres, mile- age, fuel consumed and average speed. It also has a built in facility to show fuel tank li- tres and kilometres left before it runs empty,” adds Makitha. This is complemented by on- board diagnostics for easy troubleshooting.
