The SAIChE IChemE Gauteng Member Group invites you to the Annual Dinner and AGM

identified four ‘vistas’ where chemical engi- neers can make a difference (energy, water, food, well-being), we held two events in March 2016, one on food, one on water. On 8 March Carl Sandrock, lecturer at Uni- versity of Pretoria, led a tasting of craft beers, explaining how beer is made, and focusing on how a craft beer is different from a commercial beer. About 40 members attended the event, which was held out-doors at the LC de Villiers sports fields, and was followed by a braai. On 9March we heard Professor MikeMuller, who spent a long career with the Department of Water Affairs, share his thoughts on the problem of addressing South Africa’s water security problems. A very thought-provoking talk from a real expert in the field. This talk was twinned, by the marvels of global informa- tion technology and the world-wide web, with a talk by Professor Mike Bradshaw in the UK, on how the UK is facing its energy security problems, in which fracking, and the impact on ground-water, is currently very much a topic of debate. About 35 people attended the event at the CSIR in Pretoria, at their new Knowledge Commons venue. The event was co-hosted by the Water Research Commission.
