PROJECTS & CONTRACTS

DURBAN's MALUKAZI BULK SEWER

B osch Projects was appointed to carry out multi-disciplinary designs, implementation and construction management for the Malukazi Bulk Sewer Infrastructure Scheme (a sub-project of the Provision of Water and Sanitation Services to Human Settlements – Sanitation Phase 3). The Bulk Sewer Scheme included the construction of bulk sewer gravity mains, a sewer pumpstation, sewer rising main and 20№ communal ablution facilities, with associated water and sewer reticulation, connecting into the adjacent Lower Malukazi Phase 1 catchment. “Apart from the civil design and electrical and mechanical components, Bosch Projects was also responsible for the important co-ordination management of sub-specialists, including mechanical, ventilation, fire, geotechnical, electrical, roads and earthing contractors,” says project manager, Manditha Jamuna, Bosch completed (in February 2019) a R32-million bulk sewer infrastructure project, south of Durban, for the eThekwini Water and Sanitation Division. Bosch Projects – a member of the Bosch Holdings group of multi-disciplinary consulting engineering companies – has recently

Projects. “This project, which commenced in August 2016, created employment within the community and now provides a basic level of service of sanitation and water to the previously unserviced community. “Despite numerous challenges affecting the continuity of work, including business forums, community unrest and political pressure in the area, the project was completed within budget and to the highest quality standards.” Civil design for this project encompassed the pumpstation design review, the design of a temporary pumpstation, bulk and reticulation sewer infrastructure, roads and stormwater rehabilitation and the environmental management of water course. Electrical and Mechanical components included pump and associated pipework design, ventilation design, lighting and electrical supply, lightning protection and telemetry. Another challenge of this project included construction of the pumpstation, in excessive ground water conditions. The base of the concrete superstructure of the pumpstation was partially completed in a previous phase of the Sanitation Project. Excessive ground water ingress needed to be controlled and managed by continuous pumping out of the 18 m deep excavation during construction. Geotechnical intervention was required, to ensure stability of the excavated area. Complexity of the project was increased as a temporary pumpstation – designed to service communal ablution facilities in the interim – was operational during construction of the main pumpstation. The temporary pumpstation was then converted into the overflow chamber of the pumpstation. Bosch Projects offers solutions throughout southern Africa, in diverse sectors, including energy and industrial plants, water and wastewater, roads, land and building developments, as well as sugar and agriculture, ports and terminals. These services include project and construction management; programme management – management of multiple linked projects; procurement and contract services; risk management; quality assurance and projects control, including cost and schedule management. 

Precast concrete BUS SHELTERS FOR TAXI RANK

The JB Marx Taxi Rank at Ikageng Extension 7, developed at a cost of just under R12-million, used precast concrete bus shelters from Rocla and interlocking pavers from Technicrete in order to make the rank convenient and user-friendly for local commuters.

T he project, in the North West Province, was recently opened and comprises supporting infrastructure such as washing bays, hawker stalls, ablution facilities, taxi/commuter shelters and a waste management building. Chris Nel, Project Manager at ALS Civil Projects, said: “We used products from Rocla and Technicrete because we know the standard of their manufacturing processes. Their cost competitiveness is in the quality of their product. Having worked with both companies on a variety of projects since 2010 they know the standard expected of them by ALS Civil Projects, and have never let us down”. “The precast concrete bus shelters are a specialised product from Rocla. We required 148 units for the JB Marx Taxi Rank and due to

the variety of dimensions required for the project, different moulds had to be used in the manufacturing process. This meant that the moulds had to be numbered at the Rocla factory and delivered in the correct order to site for installation. This was seamlessly executed by Rocla,” said Nel. “Some of the bus shelters were converted into hawker stalls,” commented Dillon Carter, Sales Consultant for Rocla in the North West. “The precast bus shelters and stalls are virtually indestructible and vandal proof. They offer shelter from heat and rain in addition to the comfort of providing seating for waiting commuters” said Carter. The durability of the pre-cast concrete products offers a relatively maintenance free lifespan, an important factor for local
