durability of Concor Buildings’ teams, and their ability to adapt to change with agility while still staying on track with the project schedule and end-dates in mind. “That’s where our sustainable teams become so important, as they can think on their feet,” says Muller. “It is also worth remembering that these teams take years to build and have often worked together on a number of previous projects.” Mentoring is a key aspect of building the team, as well as being vital to the company’s transformation goals, he says: “Transformation is about giving young men and women the opportunities to grow in the workplace by doing the work and being strongly supported.” On the environmental side, the team takes an innovative approach to ensure environmentally sound operations while at the same time contributing to community needs wherever possible. In this case, land erosion in the area was identified as an issue, so biodegradable rubble from site was donated to the community as backfill for certain eroded areas. “Working closely with the community liaison officer, the SHE team arranges for the delivery of the rubble,” says safety manager Margaret Dube. “Where aspects of the old shopping centre needed to be demolished, Concor Buildings was also able to work with the CLO to allocate re-usable items like bricks, timber and sheeting to

members of the community who could put the material to good use.” Dube highlights that safety is always a foundation value on any project, and training is especially important for unskilled workers and those who do not have much on-site experience. Working with her junior safety officers and safety representatives from the subcontractors, a culture of safety is constantly reinforced. 
