Construction World March 2021

BUILDING

Health & Safety Concor has an excellent team heading health and safety on site in conjunction with ComPrac, the client’s safety agent. Visible Felt Leadership from the entire production and safety team ensures that contractors, subcontractors and tenant contractors execute work safely at all times. Weekly walks are conducted in all the buildings to ensure compliance and any digressions are addressed immediately. Creating a strong safety culture is always a challenge on bigger projects with a large number of subcontractors but Concor’s commitment to its Stop.Think.Act initiative has seen active involvement becoming a trend on site. A new concept has been introduced on this site; labourers are shown a picture and are asked to identify unsafe or potentially hazardous practices and to suggest corrective action. This method of interactive discussion is proving to have great impact when used in conjunction with traditional safety instructions. On average, there are 350 workers from 22 different contractors on site and this increases as tenants start with their fit-out activities. The construction team has worked in excess of 700 000 hours on the project to date. They have worked over 350 000 hours targeting 500 000 hours incident free by the time they hand over the last building for this phase. The COVID lockdown added a new level of challenges and anxiety to the construction industry and to date, through early preparation

and policy implementation, the contractor has ensured it was ready to start again on site once the lockdown restriction relaxation allowed construction to commence on 1 June 2020. Implemented daily scanning points, wash stations, social distancing measures, signage and continual communication have enabled Concor to get the construction activities back on track from day one after the restrictions were removed. This was a particularly challenging period, but through Concor’s commitment to its values, one of which is care, the contractor is still producing an upmarket and modern product while demonstrating care towards all parties on site. Quantifiable time, cost and quality Programming, costing and quality aspects of the project are managed on a daily basis and regular meetings are held between staff, subcontractors, professional teams, senior management and the client in different forums to ensure the project remains on track. Monthly cost and project reviews focus on risk and opportunities, and include a strong focus on costs to ensure the project stays on track. Weekly planning meetings, including schematics of progress, form a key for all stakeholders to understand the progress and to ensure completion of the project on time. This is critical as tenants end their current leases and need to move into their new office. Any disruption
