rainfalls causing severe environmental damage. SUDS systems have been shown to treat and remove small quantities of hydrocarbons and heavy metals and therefore offer two unique solutions – superior water attenuation and infiltration and environmental protection. Analysis of water exiting from a typical Permeable Paving system has been found to be as clean as water from a traditional modern sewage works and with a pH of approximately 7,5. Francois Venter, managing director of SurePave commented, “We have used the Technicrete permeable technology at a project in Mt Edgecombe where the main advantage for the client was that the storm water flow was delayed (attenuated) so they did not need to build an attenuation dam for this property. The final appearance is good, and the drainage technology is sound, so the slightly extra cost for the system is outweighed by the savings achieved through water efficiencies. We anticipate a greater demand for permeable paving on projects we will be involved with in the future”. Environmentally friendly clay stock bricks Oconbrick clay stock bricks are environmentally friendly due to their manufacturing process which is from natural soil as opposed to chemi- cally compressed materials. They offer high performance and longevity characteristics giving a greater durability and strength. Ocon Brick clay stock bricks are a low carbon footprint brick having excellent acoustics with low water absorption and are naturally fire resistant. The carbon content of the Ocon Brick’s clay stock bricks gets tested on an hourly basis with a carbon determinator. Random selections of clay stock bricks are sent to an external laboratory for SANS 227 compli- ance testing on a monthly basis. Ocon Brick supplied five million clay stock bricks to the five star Green Rated Standard Bank building in Rosebank and has supplied bricks to two other five star, Green Star rated buildings, namely ABSA Towers West, Johannesburg and Nedbank Menlyn Maine Falcon Building also in Johannesburg.
spill on site where it can be contained either below ground (i.e. addi- tional underground storage tanks), in an above ground, bund-wall area, or ideally both. Filter cartridge life expectancy is between 3 – 5 years depending on the environment and usage that the filter is subject to although it is recommended to have a spare filter cartridge that can be inserted during routing cleaning of the current filter. Applied in such diverse industries from bus and coach wash bays to mining operations, all of the basic elements of the ecoSep, ecoLine and ecoStop systems can be accessed from ground level, minimising confined entry access when conducting routine cleaning and maintenance. Permeable paving technology Industrial and residential establishments that have landscaped and paved walkways and driveways often have enormous water runoff due to insufficient storm water drainage systems. Recycled non potable water required for activities such as sanitation and landscaping can easily be captured via the Aqua permeable paving technology from Technicrete, which not only attenuates storm-water effectively, but also enables water ‘harvesting’ to be conducted easily and efficiently. The Technicrete Aqua Sustainable Underground Drainage System (SUDS) allows rainfall to infiltrate through a concrete block with widened joints, into a sub-base, which then control releases the water either via attenuation into sewers or water supplies or infiltration into the soil below the paved area, eliminating excessive pressure on existing storm water systems. SUDS are particularly effective in the prevention of flooding and water run-off in areas such as car parks, industrial estates, domestic drives and airport service areas where the area of paved area is typi- cally very large. Heavy metals, hydrocarbons, rubber, dust, silts and other debris are generally deposited on impermeable surfaces during dry weather, which are removed into treatment works, rivers or streams during
