Construction World October 2018

T he Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), in agreement with international engineering bodies, stipulates that South African engineering professionals must undertake CPD activities to keep abreast of expert knowledge, to demonstrate competence and to renew professional registration. WearCheck has always placed value on ongoing skills training and knowledge development, and the company has presented several lev- els of oil analysis training for many years. In 2015 WearCheck became an accredited training partner for the internationally-acclaimed Mobius Institute, and began offering condition monitoring courses. The SAIMechE has approved the following WearCheck courses for CPD points: reliability solutions training courses at WearCheck, you can now earn CPD (continuing professional development) points – this was recently approved by the South African Institute for Mechanical Engineers (SAIMechE). EARN CPD POINTS Did you know? When you complete Mobius

WearCheck’s Mobius trainer Dennis Swanepoel, who was among the first on the continent to complete his Vibration ISO CAT IV certifi- cation, is a qualified mechanical technician and has more than 20 years’ experience in the reliability improvement field. Says Swanepoel, ‘The SAIMechE approval for CPD points is an excellent endorsement of our courses. Their ratings will be revised in 2021. They are currently validating the three-day Asset Reliability Practitioner ISO CAT course for CPD points, too. ‘For a plant to operate at maximum reliability, it takes competent and well-trained technicians who apply their world class knowledge and skills. WearCheck’s training courses can enhance staff compe- tency to boost the bottom line of the business. Mobius training is internationally acclaimed as the standard for reliability solutions technicians, and the courses are run by Wear- Check on demand. Costs include the examination fee for CAT I and II, and are as follows: The condition monitoring overview courses do not include training material, and a minimum of six candidates is required for all training courses. There may be an additional charge for the lecturer’s accommodation and travel.  WearCheck’s reliability solutions technician Dennis Swanepoel is a certified Mobius instructor, and was among the first people in South Africa to achieve Vibration ISO CAT IV certification. He recently presented two papers at the 2018 IMVAC conference in Belgium.

roof inspection process, as they venture onto two different construction sites which demonstrate both correct and incorrect roofing practices.” “The course is designed to enable: any technical person to conduct roof inspec- tions with knowledge and insight; regis- tered professionals to sign off roofs on their own, knowing they speak with author- ity; and individuals with experience in the roof construction industry to be sufficient- ROOF INSPECTION TRAINING BRIDGING GAPS Due to popular demand, the Institute for Timber Construction South Africa (ITC-SA), the professional body for the engineered timber construction sector, will be hosting another CPD- accredited Roof Inspection Training Course from 6 to 8 November 2018 at its head office in Gauteng. One such student is Thea Smal, Civil Engineer, who says, “The ITC-SA courses have taught me a great deal and have helped me to bridge the gap between what I learned from university and the practical application thereof. I believe that being associated with a professional body like the ITC-SA that helps to regulate the industry is very important, as there are many players out there designing and manufacturing without any guidance or regulation.” 

A ccording to Amanda Obbes, ITC-SA Training Course offered by the Institute comprises an intensive theoretical and technical overview of timber roof structures. Over the three-day period, students are exposed to basic terminology and timber structure design, framing and bracing, design consideration for light and heavily loaded timber roof structures, manufacturing, transportation and storage, and the various timber roof structures and types of buildings. Further to this, students get first-hand, up-close experience with the General Manager, “The Roof Inspection

ly trained to inspect roofs under an accredited ITC- SA Professional Engineer,” she says, noting, “Many of our past trainees have attested to the exceptional value they have accessed from this course, especial- ly with regards to the way the practical component of the course has helped cement much of their past theoretical training.”
