CYBER SECURITY

Beyond building security • 150 fire extinguishers, 100 smoke de- tectors, 15 fire panels and two sup- pression systems protect the building against the threat of smoke and fire. • 86 cameras secure the building’s traffic and identity management. • 100 control points are accessed 3 200 times per day. • 150 vents manage 21 000 litres of conditioned air per second, heated or cooled as needed by BMS software. By offering concierge-like services that ease them through their workday with a lot less effort and stress , this smart building is driving productivity and maximising the effectiveness of employees as well as the consumption of the facility. The use of an advanced BMS platform al- lows all the elements of the system to work seamlessly. The Cork building uses Johnson Controls Metasys BMS and C-Cure Access Control systems. Built on open systems, they allow the integration of multiple sys- tems and data streams. Data rules ensure that information relevant to staff, security, building administration as well as caterers gets to where it needs to go. The future of security Financial institutions are already beginning to think beyond building management. In fact, some of this functionality is already

being deployed locally by financial institu- tions. Security and convenience are impor- tant for banks in South Africa, especially in large headquarter facilities that are often located in busy, congested areas, with a huge number of people accessing the fa- cilities daily. As employee experience becomes more important, and AI and IoT data be- come more ubiquitous, one can definitely expect to see more functionality built into and onto these platforms. Security, access control, building manage- ments systems (BMS) andWorkforce Con- venience. Ordinarily these notions would not be combined in a single concept. However, in the case of forward-thinking facility owners, they are getting ever-clos- er together. With a little creativity, hu- man-centred design thinking and great use of available technologies, the capabilities of security technology are being stretched beyond their original intended purposes — and it is really paying off. In Ireland's Smartest Building, One Al- bert Quay, Cork, security and building man- agement technology do more than police perimeters and keep the office at the right temperature. With the addition of analyt- ics, big data, integration with back-end HR, email calendaring and office management systems, as well as an app or two, it is simplifying life for employees and helping them achieve high-value work. Every day at One Albert Quay, one man- agement platform centralises it all. There is the daily building management capability: • 2 000 lights are managed from one central system, illuminating 12 000 m 2 . • 320 people arrive at five access-card readers and six smart lifts open auto- matically to take staff to their respec- tive floors, saving 11 kWh of energy.

PSIRT website helps achieve a high level of security Phoenix Contact is one of the first companies to have established an international Product Security Incident Response Team (PSIRT). This website allows customers, scientists, authorities, and all those involved in the field of access security to report potential security vulnerabilities. Acknowl- edgment of receipt will be provided within two working days. Following extensive testing and the provision of patches, details of the security vulnerability will be published on the PSIRT website. This is common practice so as not to alert potential hackers to the security vul- nerability before users have been able to protect their application with a bug-fixed software version. For example, security specialists from Positive Technologies, a security solutions provider, identified a security vulnerability in switches from the FL SWITCH product family and reported this via the PSIRT website. The vulnerability was removed by means of a firmware update and the relevant information was then published online. With regard to the publication of security vulnerabilities, the PSIRT team also works closely with CERT@VDE, a platform for the coordination of IT security problems specifically intended for small and medi- um-sized companies working in the field of industrial automation.
