LIGHTING

The projected L70 value for LEDs can exceed 50 000 hours, but manufacturers are encouraged not to claim a longer rated lifetime because of un- certainties of the projection methodology. In addi- tion, the LED chips often last longer than the driv- ers that power them, which means that industrial users may need to replace drivers before the light engine needs to be replaced. The maintenance schedule for a lighting solu- tion should also account for the amount of dirt and dust in the operating environment. Dirt accumulat- ing on a lamp lowers the light output and can skew the light distribution; dirt accumulating on reflec- tive surfaces, such as walls and ceilings can also lower total illumination. Regular cleaning, painting, and general upkeep can help ensure that the light- ing solution operates at its highest level. Conclusion The costs of ownership are just one consideration to take into account when identifying an illumina-

tion solution. To learn more, download the white paper: Considerations for Lighting in a Manufac- turing Environment. Getting Amped over smarter LED Lights

The market for public lighting manage- ment is in a dynamic transition phase and fundamentally changing through the adoption of new technologies such as Philips AmpLight. The AmpLight solution is a complete web-based solution with advanced communication functionality that can be easily integrated with existing lighting installations. A centralised solution such as this is easy to implement and requires less equipment than a pole-based standalone solution. AmpLight is a solution that per- fectly combines cost saving and less emission benefits, without compromising

quality or safety. It allows for the remote control of LED lamp dimming over the ex- isting mains wiring. AmpLight is easy to install and use in retrofit installations. It is easy to interface the solution to all SCADA systems, via dry contacts. Customers are able to uti- lise this solution even over long distances to control lighting systems over multiple kilometres. In addition, a coded mains sig- nal does not disturb other devices in the same mains grid, unlike traditional power line technology. The AmpLight solutions also does not have the issues of signal interference, from external sources as in competing RF-based communication tech- nology. Through AmpLight, cities can expect energy saving of up to 40%, with these savings coming on top of the power sav- ings they already obtain by using LED lighting fixtures. In addition, cities are able to get accurate metering of energy consumption, have the flexibility to adapt lighting levels across the city areas, obtain accurate reporting of lamp-burning hours, as well as real-time status feedback to in- crease maintenance efficiency.

Moreover, the continuous streaming of signal over mains ensures robust commu- nication. The solution has been designed for outdoor usage, so it can withstand the associated temperatures (at both ends of the spectrum) as well as humid condi- tions. Municipalities and road authorities can benefit from increased safety in the streets as well as reduced light pollution levels. The benefits for citizens include less crime and a higher sense of safety, while the city will also be able to gain a more unique character through the innova- tive lighting solutions. Additionally, sports and music festival event fans can look for- ward to greater atmospheres at events, concerts, and sporting matches through event specific lighting. Ultimately, smart solutions such as AmpLight makes cities more efficient, effective, and simply more liveable for cit- izens, while helping cities become more environmentally-friendly and saving the municipalities a lot of money on energy and maintenance bills in the long run.
