New moisture management system for transformers Moisture, in combination with temperature, is the primary factor af- fecting the degradation of the insulating paper and consequently the lifetime of a transformer. With the unique features of the new EX- PIOTECH Moisture Management Systems (MMS), Maschinenfabrik Reinhausen (MR) has introduced a valuable monitoring and mainte- nance solution for utilities and industries to optimise the lifetime of power transformers. The MR-Expiotech Smart Drying System enables transformer op- erators to reduce and maintain the paper moisture at an optimum target value, while preserving the winding pressure at a safe level, all with the transformer remaining energised and in normal service. The Expiotech MMS can extend the transformer lifetime by up to 20 years and reduce the risk of failure. Compared to conventional vacuum dry- ing systems total costs of operation are significantly lower due to: - Minimal downtime - Minimal installation costs - Automatic operation with remote supervision and control - No need for readjusting inhibitors and passivators. Expiotech MMS units are equipped with intelligent moisture assess- ment and control within the system’s proprietary algorithms. The smart drying concept ensures accuracy, optimisation and control. Reinhausen’s expertise in this field is well established. In South Africa its experience extends over 15 years and over 600 transform- ers dried. The Expiotech MMS is now available worldwide. It can be sup- plied as either a permanent installation or a mobile unit, according to each customer’s preference. The Expiotech system can be purchased and operated by the transformer owner, or the MR-Drying-Service can be employed on a pay per transformer basis, in which case the transformer owner does not have to purchase the hardware.
