SENSORS, SWITCHES + TRANSDUCERS

Leuze 10 optical sensors offer high tolerance to different materials

Humidity probe for tough processes The Michell HygroSmart HS3 humidity probe, available from Instrotech, is designed to withstand the kind of harsh and demanding conditions found in industrial pro- cesses. Unlike many ‘disposable’ probes that have a short life in such harsh condi- tions before needing to be replaced, the HygroSmart HS3 sensor has a polymer tile to provide reliable measurements over a longer term. In addition, it has an accuracy of 0.8 % RH, making it among the most accurate and reliable RH probes on the market, as well as allowing for longer recalibration periods. The HygroSmart HS3 provides a low life-time cost of ownership when compared to disposable probes. The device consists of a solid, corrosion-resistant probe body with an interchangeable sensor. When recalibration is due, the old HygroSmart HS3 sensor is simply exchanged for a new, freshly calibrated one. This procedure takes only a few seconds to carry out with the probe itself remaining installed. Replacing only the sensor, rather than the whole probe, is quick and simple, and saves users money over the lifetime of the probe. In most industrial applications, RH probes have to withstand vibration, exposure to water, occasional heavy shocks and high levels of electrical interference. The HygroSmart HS3 body is designed to cope with all these environmental factors. As well as the solid body, the probe has a 10 bar pressure rating, RFI/EMC electrical noise approvals and IP67 ingress protection rating. Another advantage of the HygroSmart HS3 probe is that it gives control to the user, as it is 100% configurable. This enables users to alter the RH and temperature measurements to keep step with changes or developments in the respective pro- cesses, with no extra cost. Engineered with a high tolerance to different materials, the Leuze 10 Series of optical sen- sors detect objects and measure distances with an accuracy of +/-30 mm. Available from Countapulse Controls, these high perfor- mance sensors have an operating range of up to eight metres. The high tolerance of the Leuze 10 Series sensors extends to the angle of incidence, the colour, surface structure and brightness of re- flective material. This enables the sensor to de- tect different materials, such as wood or matt as well as glossy metal, even under varying environmental conditions. The Leuze 10 Series is also suitable for sens- ing applications where deep black materials are found, where objects are not ideally aligned, or where they are moving rapidly. The highly visible status indicators on the devices make for ease of use and the sen- sors also have large control buttons. The LED display has been designed to facilitate step- by-step commissioning and diagnosis at the press of a button. The compact housing, with integrated re- cesses for M4 screws or nuts, means the sensors can be installed in applications where space is restricted. However, the small size of the units does not impact on their performance. Johannesburg-based Countapulse Con- trols supplies a comprehensive range of Leuze sensing solutions. The company can assess diverse sensing applications and pro- vide a fit-for-purpose solution to meet the specific needs of an operation. A 24/7 hotline is available to assist end users with any tech- nical challenges they may experience. First digital float switch with PNP/NPN signal and high accuracy WIKA has launched a float switch with a PNP/NPN output signal. The model GLS- 1000 detects the level of liquids with an accuracy of ≤ 1 mm. The digitised float measuring principle of the newWIKA level switch is implement- ed using semiconductor sensors. These enable an unlimited number of switching cycles. Users can define up to four switch points with a minimum distance of only 2.5 mm. Thus the instrument reacts to the smallest changes in level. At the same

time, the GLS-1000 can monitor the temperature of the medi- um via a temperature output with a Pt100/Pt1000 resistance. Even with the electronic circuitry, the digital float switch is also an economical measurement solution owing to its similarity in design to its conventional counterpart. With the GLS-1000, traditional PNP/NPN limit level switches can now also be replaced by a float switch. Enquiries:WIKA Instruments (Pty) Ltd. Tel: +27 (0)11 621 0000 or Email: sales.za@wika.com
