Equipment supplied to chrome recovery plant

Local firm JB Switchgear Solutions was recently awarded a multi-million Rand contract for the design, manufacture and supply of motor control centres and VSD panels destined for Anglo American Platinum’s Amandelbult Chrome recovery plant. The Chrome Recovery Plant (CRP) will be installed prior to the secondary circuit, Mainstream Inert Grinding (MIG) process and scavenger flotation. The new CRP will be of a modular design consisting of twin modules of spiral concentrators, employing a multi-stage configuration of separators and spirals. Once the chromite’s been extracted, the concentrate will be redirected to the platinum benefication plant for further processing. The project is located within Rustenburg Platinum Mine’s mining right area 25 km south of the town ofThabazimbi in the Limpopo Province. The chrome recovery plant will comprise twomodules, with the combined capacity of 250 kilotons per month and will each be approximately 30 m x 30 m in size. Each chromite recovery module will comprise feed systems, thickeners, cyclones and spirals. JB Switchgear is supplying six ‘Eagle’ series motor control centres, and robust, reliable and user-friendly design well suited for this application. Starter sizes vary between 1,1 kW and 45 kW.The operational voltage is 550V with a prospec- tive fault level of 50 kA. In addition to the MCCs, JB Switchgear also supplied 52 VSD panels ranging from 0,25 kW to 220 kW.The communication protocol for this project is ‘Profibus’. Easy monitoring of mechanical components Siemens has developed the Siplus CMS1200 Condition Monitoring System to monitor mechanical components. It is an expansion module for the S7-1200 controller that is based on the SM 1281 ConditionMonitoringModule. The user creates an efficient monitoring system by combining up to seven SM 1281 modules, to each of which four vibration acceleration sensors and one speed measurement sensor can be connected. This system can be used for continuous monitoring of mechanical com- ponents such as motors, generators, pumps and fans. When Siplus CMS1200 is used for predictive maintenance, significant changes as a result of wear, for example, can conse- quently be detected at an early stage, enabling maintenance activities to be better planned and carried out on schedule. By means of the TIA Portal (Totally IntegratedAutomation) engineer- ing framework, the Siplus CMS1200 Condition Monitoring System is readily integrated into an automation group containing HMI (human machine interface) devices, controls and mo- tion control components.
