Engines to drive industrial pumps

From agriculture and irrigation to mining and firefighting, Cummins supplies a range of high-quality engines for pumps in different industries. According to Mohamed Othman, Industrial Pump Engines Segment Leader at Cummins Africa Middle East, these diverse industries represent a major opportunity for innovation and growth for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in the region. Othman has been with Cummins Africa Middle East (AME) for seven years and has an in-depth knowledge of the regional market. He points out that Cummins does not supply pump products as such, but the engines that drive the pumps in various industries. “Our focus has been and will continue to be the engine technology itself.” Cummins supplies end users and the

OEMs that manufacture pump products. A major application for pumps in construction and mining, is dewatering. In agriculture and irrigation, Cummins supplies variable-speed engines to optimise centre-pivot irrigation lines, while in the firefighting sector pumps are used to protect the full spectrum of assets from fire. In this highly competitive sector, Othman says Cummins has a competitive edge in its distribution network across the continent, coupled with its aftermarket service and customer support. “We

maintain a strategic stockholding of engines and critical spares, giving customers the peace-of-mind that any contingencies can be dealt with effectively and timeously. Cummins engine technology offers high efficiency in fuel consumption and operates within emissions regulations. The company has a range of trusted and durable mechanical engines that meet the region’s specific requirements, arduous operating conditions, remote locations and related issues such as variable quality of fuel supply. A major advantage is simplified troubleshooting.Where technical expertise is not always available, this reduces downtime significantly. Key to Cummins’ customer focus is that, as well as supplying products, it focuses on engine selection for each application. “We work closely with our customers to ascertain their exact requirements. We can then specify the most cost-effective solution, based on the optimum horsepower needed,” Othman says. This customised approach has the added benefit of reducing overall capital costs for clients and the support of customer- focused seminars. Events are planned this year for Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, Johannesburg in South Africa, Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, and Accra in Ghana. “At these events we share the latest developments in the industrial engine segment particularly relating to pumps,” Othman says. He notes growth opportunities in the mining industry in Zambia, Botswana, Ghana and South Africa, and in agriculture and irrigation in North Sudan and Ethiopia. Cummins works with customers to optimise their existing engine fleets and has recently concluded major contracts with a leading mining house in Ghana and a major Saudi Arabian oil producer.
