MENTORING ENTITY OF THE YEAR

RAMATSOBANE MPE – RAMATSOBANE DEVELOPERS

WINNER

R amatsobane Developers is a 100% black women- owned business registered in 2008. The sole member, Ramatsobane Innocent Mpe identified an opportunity with the vision to transform and empower local communities. This company has since 2014 been involved in hosting of intern students from TVET/FET colleges for experiential training. In addition, at the end of their intern-ship programme, the students receive an accredited training in Health & Safety to give them a competitive edge in the job market. The company deliberately ensures that 30-40% of projects is sub-contracted to emerging women-owned companies with lower cidb grading. There are steps that the company is following when instituting a mentorship pro-gramme: “Firstly, we enter into agreement with local accredited training providers to host their approved TVET/FET students who are in their final year and are unable to complete their studies without doing experiential learning. “Then we get a list of their approved intern students and interview them to establish their needs and whether they meet

our expectations as the host company. After students’ selection, we place them according to their qualifications. For each site we allocate a mentor for each group of students who will assess their progress and ensure that their needs are met, like proper accommodation and timely receipt of their monthly stipends. “To ensure that our interns’ goals are met, a monthly report is submitted to the training provider who in turn submit our report to the respective SETAs. Since 2014 we have worked with HWSETA, CETA and Service SETA. “The monthly reports serve to provide feedback and suggestions to our interns and assist them in improving on their site duties, as we prepare them for job placement and to complete their studies. “At the end of the internship programme, the company provide the students with an experience certificate which clearly states the duration undertaken. “We also assist women-owned companies with lower cidb grading and who have just entered the construction industry on how to complete bids, sub-contracting and by entering into joint venture agreements for them to upgrade,” explains Mpe. 
