Lighting in Design February-March 2016

Production of Lightwell's Smart City lamp post, LightMotion, is in full swing. In addition to illuminat- ing, this futuristic streetlight integrates lighting with features such asWi-Fi, a security camera for extra safety and an EV-charging fixture for electric cars. The EV-charging fixture, courtesy of collaboration with Dutch company,The NewMotion, is the latest addition to this versatile mast, targeted at today's ever-smarter cities. Last summer, the first LightMotion lamp post was piloted in Rotterdam. Beijing and Los Angeles too, have expressed keen interest in the intelligent Dutch lamp post. Copenhagen is one step ahead and will start field trials soon. In other words: the future is here. LightMotion is more than just a lamp post. The intelligent LED-lighting unit is equipped with sen- sors that detect motion and adjust lighting inten- sity according to ambient light conditions. Smart lighting will switch on during a daytime storm for instance and dim automatically when no motion (people, cars, etc) is registered at night. The product is smart, effective and sustainable as no energy is wasted on unnecessarily high levels of illumination. The range has been designed to house a cam- era system as optional. This is an effective tool that increases safety and improves management of traffic and other issues requiring attention on public streets, installations and industrial estates. Light mast based camera systems could be used to pro- vide input for a smart parking system that directs drivers to the closest free parking space, limiting unnecessary circling in search of an empty spot. For owners of electric cars, LightMotion masts equipped withThe NewMotion EV battery-charging module are a real boon. The module allows drivers to charge their car batteries like any other 'con- ventional' charging point and to pay for the charge by card. But the efficient integration with street lighting means there can simply be more of them too, because of the lower cost. Use of The New Motion EV-charging station locator app will make short work of finding an available charging mast. Charge while travelling? Enjoy the built inWi-Fi and watch the news or prepare for your next meeting. Recent support from governments across the globe for the Humble Lamppost, a competing multi-functional product, indicates that the market introduction of Lightmotion is well timed. The UK government recently announced that it would support a street pole based EV solution with 60 million Euros. In both California and Asia similar developments are taking place, confirming market research that the LightMotion is a product targeted at a growth market for years to come.
