Lighting in Design November December 2017

Safer passage for motorists and pedestrians BEKA Schréder supplied an energy-efficient LED light- ing solution for the N1 Botlokwa Road Safety Project in the Matoks area. The key purpose of the project was to provide safety for pedestrians and motorists by reducing conflict zones through the introduction of pedestrian bridges and diamond interchanges. To provide safer passage for motorists and pedestrians through the area, lighting was essential and, having provided a uniform, compliant lighting installation; visual safety and easier visual identification of risks has been ensured.

BEKA Schréder’s LEDlume-midi street light lu- minaires were selected to provide a compliant and efficient lighting installation and allow for effective transition lighting from dark surroundings to illumi- nated roads leading to the interchanges. Lighting of the area is key for the visibility of pedestrians and obstacles along the highway. BEKA LEDstream 19W LED floodlights were cho- sen for the aesthetic illumination of the arches of the two pedestrian bridges situated at either end of the project. The arches provide an aesthetic night time marker, while the indirect lighting effectively illumi- nates the bridge deck uniformly to provide pedestrians with safe passage over the N1 highway. The lighting design was by SMEC. BEKA Schréder locally develops and manufactures LED lighting products, designed and suitable for local conditions and the company is proud to be associated with SANRAL, SMEC Pretoria branch and OSCON in providing a successful energy-efficient LED lighting solution for this project.

BEKA Schréder’s LEDstream floodlights were chosen to illuminate the arches of the two pedestrian bridges.
