Lighting in Design Q2 2018
369 collection by Newport Lighting
Named after geometric angles, the 369 collection of lamps by Guy Harris of Newport Lighting features, as hinted by its name, 30, 60 and 90 degree angles. Harris was inspired by the complex arrangement of industrial pipes and ducting in refineries where these elements meet and separate. The cluster changes shape depending of the viewer’s orientation. Look carefully at the table lamp and you’ll notice the off-centre placement of the upright; this is to make space for cups of coffee or a sneaky bedtime whisky. The 369 collection is a subversion of the standard straight-up-and-down-standing-lamp-with-a-shade that we’re all familiar with. Here though, there’s an injection of simple yet original thought to reveal honest home-grown design.

The Veli Mini Trio Couture suspension lamp, handmade in Slamp’s Italian atelier, is refined and trendy. Each volant, made of the unbreakable, patented techno polymer Opafex, is indi- vidually hand-fixed to create three-dimensional shapes, held together by a small ring to create a soft, feminine cluster. Each diffusor is fitted with a magnetic hanging device, making instal- lation and maintenance quick and easy. The red wrapped cord adds a touch of irony to the suspension lamp, and the sartorial ‘gathers’ adorn any public or private space, much like a rich bouquet of fowers. Love Clover range by willowlamp
Forming part of willowlamp’s expanding collection of exquisite pendants and chandeliers, the Love Clover range is a suite of charming yet elegant hanging lights that pay homage to the botanical beauty and keepsake, the four-leaf clover. Each of the four distinctive designs in the new range conveys the serendipitous feelings associated with finding a four-leaf clover. According to willowlamp’s founder and creative director, Adam Hoets, the Love Clover range was inspired by a run in the mountain where he and his fiancé [now his wife] happened across fields of clover. “Since that day, she has encouraged me to use the shape of the four-leaf clover in my work.” Initially, only one lighting design bearing this distinctive motif was planned, but then Hoets decided to expand the range to three pendants and one chandelier. “As cute and cheerful as four-leaf clovers are, it took me a long time to translate them into three-dimensional objects that were interesting,” Hoets says.
