Lighting in Design Q2 2019

Every second year the Euroluce lighting fair takes place in Milan, Italy in con- junction with the Salone del Mobile Design week. This year, the Milan Design Week was held from 9 to 14 April at the Fiera Milano showgrounds. Spazio Lighting, lucky enough to be able to attend the event, came back in awe of the beautiful lighting and furniture items launched at the fair, but also inspired by the latest trends and technologies that were on display. One of the lighting ranges that stood out was the stunning new collection launched by Foscarini. The combination of aesthetically beautiful pendants and floor lamps were combined with state-of-the-art technology that offers the user complete customisation in terms of dimming and colour temperature, all controlled by a user friendly mobile app. Nemo Lighting also had some very interesting new lighting solutions on display, but the Bird by Bernhard Osann really stood out. At first glance, it looks like an ordinary desk lamp, but on closer inspection you notice that the fitting is composed of a protruding matte black painted arm where the light source is located, and a vertical brass counterweight. The fitting can be placed freely on the edge of a surface; it will oscillate and move but always returns to the horizontal position. The LED module incorporated in the arm, rotates around its own axis, making the lamp versatile while providing diffused direct and indirect lighting. Brokis truly overwhelmed visitors with its beautifully unique pendants and floor lamps that were displayed in clusters. The IVY range of pendants designed by Lucie Koldova stole the show with their clusters of intricate glass orbs made up of hand-blown glass. Their light fittings are not only a source of light, but true artistry. Luceplan introduced a ground-breaking new concept of interior pendants that double as sound absorbers. These will be very popular in the hospitality industry in years to come. Used in restaurants the fittings, if installed in the correct locations and correct sequence, will drastically reduce the amount of noise patrons are exposed to. What surprised Spazio Lighting the most, how- ever, was the Illan pendant by up-and-coming designer Zsuzsanna Horvath. The idea of the pendant comes from experimentation with different methods of laser cutting applied to different materials. When sheets of paper and wood are cut geometrically, they take on new characteristics, suspended by the force of gravity. Trends that Spazio Lighting observed throughout the fair were a move to- wards rechargeable energy sources as well as customisation, whether in the composition of the fitting itself or the brightness and colour temperature of the light being emitted by the fitting. Rich coppers and golds, and textured fabrics are definitely some of the trends that we will be seeing soon in South Africa. All these exciting new products and more will be available through Spazio. www.spazio.co.za Spazio Lighting’s Euroluce 2019 review
