Lighting in Design Q2 2023
The indoor and outdoor application of architectural lighting
A rchitectural lighting is a multidisciplinary field that refers to the use of light to enhance and complement the design and function of buildings, spaces, and landscapes. The application of this style of lighting can be used both indoors and outdoors to create visually stunning and functional spaces. These are some of the most common applications. Indoor applications Commercial spaces: Offices, shopping centres and restaurants all call for functional and energy-ef ficient lighting that is also aesthetically pleasing. The use of architectural lighting in such spaces is to showcase merchandise, create a welcoming ambience and improve the overall functionality of the space. Residential spaces: In homes, architectural lighting can be applied to almost every area. Ex amples are track lights, wall-mounted spotlights and recessed lights for features like artwork, bookcases and fireplaces, and under-cabinet lights in the kitchen. Museums and galleries: Architectural lighting in these places plays an important role in displaying artworks and artefacts. This enables viewers to see the details and textures clearly while those items on display are not damaged by severe excessive lighting.
Hospitality spaces: Hotels, resorts and casinos all call for lighting that is both functional and aes thetically pleasing to look at. Architectural lighting here is used to create a specific mood, for example, fun or romantic or glamorous, while simultaneously enhancing the guest’s experience. Outdoor applications Landscape lighting: Green spaces like parks, gardens and residential landscapes all benefit from architectural lighting to highlight natural features and provide safety and security. Building façades: Buildings with unusual, im pressive or detailed architectural details can be showcased with architectural lighting. This lighting technique also highlights details like brick, mosaic and stonework. Parking lots: This public space demands lighting that is highly functional and energy-efficient. Its job is to provide sufficient illumination for people to park their cars and for pedestrians to walk. Sports grounds: From stadiums to athletic fields to arenas, optimal lighting in these spaces is nec essary for both athletes and spectators alike.
