First LED stadium lighting installation in the DRC

BEKA Schréder recently supplied the lighting solution for the first LED floodlight installation for a stadium in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The ‘Stade DIUR’, or Kolwezi Sports Stadium, is located in Kolwezi, the capital city of Lualaba Province in the south of the DRC. This LED floodlight installation will become the benchmark technology and installation for the DRC. The OMNIstar-maxi was the preferred LED luminaire because of its superior performance and high energy savings compared to floodlights with traditional light sources. The OMNIstar-maxi LED floodlight offers all the advantages of an LED solution: low energy consumption, improved visibility with a colour temperature close to daylight, limited mainte- nance, longer life, and instant switch on/off, enhancing the athletic environment and minimalising light pollution for the surrounding population. The OMNIstar-maxi has been de- signed to provide an unrivalled combination of performance and flexibility for lighting areas where high lumen packages are needed while offering maximum savings in energy and maintenance costs with a short payback time. As a result of the positive impact of the resultant lighting in the initial phase, the client is considering further upgrading its installation for television coverage of games.

Through a subtle adjustment of lighting, the mood of interior or exterior spaces can be completely transformed and the design potential fully realised. Johannesburg lighting specialist, Streamlight, curated an illuminating space at this year’s Decorex Joburg which took place at Gallagher Conven- tion Centre in August, showcasing innovative lighting solutions for the corporate, commercial, hospitality and residential markets. “Modern lighting consists of an extensive range of design options as well as varying lighting types that are suited to vastly different settings,” explained Sian Cullingworth, Portfolio Director at Reed Exhibitions. “This year’s feature, The Lighting Project by Streamlight, provided Decorex Joburg visitors with an expressive visualisation on how lighting works across varying spaces, with lighting experts available to advise on product solutions for any project.” While it’s important to select the correct lighting types for different spaces, there are also emerging trends in lighting to consider when revamping or designing. Robert Kalish, of Stream- light, explained that lighting must not be an afterthought when it comes to décor and design. “People always think of lighting when it comes to the end of a project when really it should be a feature from the get-go,” said Kalish. “Lighting is vital for highlighting the architecture of a building and bringing those soft finishes to life. If lighting choices are left to the end, then the overall look will feel rushed.” Looking at dominant lighting trends influencing global and local décor, Kalish said the type of lighting and the lighting materials were worth considering: “Technical lighting has become very important, not only for functional lighting but for ambient lighting as well. Although decorative lighting is subjective, we are seeing a preference for clusters of small pendants with glass featur- ing quite prominently in the design world, specifically ribbed or other textured glass.” Streamlight features latest décor lighting solutions
