Volvo unveils its rigid haulers

The Volvo CE rigid hauler range is avail- able in Southern African through Volvo CE’s dealer, Babcock, with the first machines expected in South Africa by the end of the year. Representing Babcock at the launch were Roger O’Callaghan, CEO – Africa, David Vaughan, MD of Babcock’s Equipment business, and Lance Mannix, Regional Manager, Northern Region. The R100E will be competing in one of the most contested segments of the rigid hauler market but Volvo CE is confident that it will soon attract a strong following. Built to perform, it is powered by a premium 783 kW Cummins QST30-Tier2 industry-proven engine. The combined drivetrain delivers high torque capa- bilities, excellent pulling performance and class-leading rimpull for optimum traction. Drivetrain control is supplied by the new Volvo Dynamic Shift Control, which automatically tailors the transmission shift-points depending on the worksite and operational inputs. The R100E is built for all surface mining and quarrying applications, where operational costs are critical. Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) has launched its new range of Volvo-branded rigid haulers at the company’s Motherwell facility in Scotland. Around 160 customers and dealers from around the world, as well as a small media contingent which included Modern Mining’s Arthur Tassell, attended the event.

G uests got their first glimpse of the new machines – the 45-ton R45D, 60-ton R60D, 72-ton R70D and the flagship 100-ton (95-tonne) R100E – on Tuesday April 10th. The star of the show was undoubtedly the R100E, a completely new rigid hauler that – says Volvo CE – combines a wealth of market and customer knowledge with proven components, new technologies and a striking new design. As well as having the chance to inspect the new range of machines, guests at the launch event – which was held over three days – also got the opportunity to test drive the flagship R100E, see how the rigid haulers are designed and manufactured and watch them in action at a nearby quarry.
