New Eco drive has applications in mining ‘green’design, says National Sales Manager Norman Maleka.
Becker Mining also suppliedWRC clamps that were used during installation and will be utilised in future maintenance of ropes. A complete spare set of rope attachments was also supplied to the mine. Hook sets, which were supplied com- plete with catch plates and jack catch boxes, are mounted in the headgear as a critical safety feature to prevent injury to person- nel and damage to the shaft infrastructure should an overwind occur. All equipment, which is proof load tested by Becker Mining to two-and-a-half times the safe working loads it will be subjected to in service, is suitable for the mine’s winder duties. It also complies fully with all the rele- vant mine health and safety acts andmining regulations. Becker Mining South Africa, tel (+27 11) 617-6300 Another benefit for mining operations in terms of enhanced health and safety is the drive’s fire mode, which allows for fans to run for as long as possible in the event of a fire, maximising smoke extraction and boosting evacuation time. In addition, the belt-break detection feature raises an alarm in the event of the belt slipping or any related fault occurring, in order to ensure continuous operation. SEW-EURODRIVE, tel (+27 11) 248-7000 4 % compared with a standard AC drive. Maleka reveals that SEW-EURODRIVE was recently approached by a Nelspruit customer for a 160-kW unit. “We are hop- ing to be able to use this as a case study, as the more real-time application data we can obtain, the more we can promote the new drive.” In terms of fan and pump control for mining applications, the LTP-B Eco drive is said to be ideal for ensuring clean airflow underground. HVAC control in mining operations is also highly energy-intensive, which means the new energy-efficient drive can make a significant contribution to total cost savings.
Fromwine farms to themining industry, the new LTP-B Eco drive from SEW-EURODRIVE is reportedly finding application in a range of sectors. The purpose-built drive is distinguished by the fact that different parameters can be set for a range of func- tions, from fan to pump control. While SEW-EURODRIVE does have gen- eral-purpose units for fans, pumps, and even conveyors, it initially saw a niche for a unit specifically for the heating, ventila- tion and air-conditioning (HVAC) industry, targeted at building designers focusing on
age fitted between it and the conveyance. This linkage ensures there is equal sharing of the load between the four head ropes. “Complete 30-ton Rocket-type safety detaching hook sets were supplied for the man/material winder, which has a 4,88 m drum and 51 mm ropes. A set of 5-ton Rocket-type safety detaching hooks was manufactured for the service winder, which has a 26 mm rope fitted.” Rocket safety detaching hooks are designed to detach the winding rope from the conveyance in the event of an overwind and arrest and suspend the conveyance in the headframe. This patented design caters for the prevention of partial detachments whilst in service. In terms of a commercial building such as a hospital, traditional drives meant that fans had to operate continually at full speed. “With the improved functionality of the LTP-B Eco HVAC drive, facilities manag- ers can now control a fan by only running it according to demand, for example. This represents a major advantage in terms of energy saving, as it allows for total flow control,” says Maleka. The HVAC sector remains a focus, espe- cially in the key building design market of Cape Town. The broader energy-saving benefits means it is equally applicable to customers in other niche sectors, especially as the drive is available in a broad power output range from 0,75 kW to 250 kW. In addition, it replaces the traditional electrolytic capacitors used in the DC link with film capacitors, which have reduced energy losses, as well as eliminating the need for AC, DC or swinging chokes, which boosts the overall efficiency of the drive by

Becker supplies winding rope attachments Installation of Becker Mining South Africa’s winding rope attachments at a mine on the Western Limb of the Bushveld Complex is now complete.
“This equipment – which was designed and manufactured locally by Becker Mining South Africa – covers the specific winding requirements of this underground mine,” says Tom Searle, the company’s Senior General Manager: Mechanical. “Four sets of head rope attachments and four sets of tail rope attachments are required for the 4,5 m drum diameter Koepe winder, which accommodates 38 mm head ropes and 40 mm tail ropes. “A Becker Thimble-type capel is fitted to the ropes with an hydraulic adjusting link-
