VDM Plant Hire opts for Hyundai excavators
for analysis by a processing unit. This unit uses the sound patterns and other process variables to determine the necessary adjustment to the mill’s feed, speed and pulp density. So direct are the improvements that can be achieved by this solution that customers can pay back their investments in less than six months “The parameters that are monitored by SAGwise include the mill’s power con- sumption, load impacts, mill load and pulp density,” Mokoena says. “The system then responds to these parameters by control- ling the mill speed, the feed rate and the water to achieve the ‘sweet spot’ where the mill runs at optimum efficiency.” Willie vanWyk, FLSmidth, tel (+27 10) 210-4820, website: www.flsmidth.com The user-friendly operator cluster, with a 7 inch wide colour LCD screen and tog- gle switch, allows the operator to select personal machine preferences. There are digital gauges for hydraulic oil and water temperature, fuel, power and work mode selection, self-diagnostics, maintenance check lists and start-up machine security. An auto power boost feature is also select- able through the monitor. HPE Africa, website: www.hpeafrica.com site to site and are fitted with long-life components. VDM Plant Hire’s newest Hyundai machine is the R210W-9S excavator. Important features include fuel economy and a new hydraulic control system for improved controllability, enhanced effi- ciency and smoother operation. A slim-profile steering column is capable of telescoping 60 mm and tilting 30 degrees. Safety features comprise a re-designed operator cab for greater protection and improved visibility, an anti-restart system and a new auto ram lock system.
VDM Plant Hire, which is celebrating 20 years in plant hire for the civil engineering and construction sectors in the Rustenburg region, plans to expand its operations to the mining sector. “We are currently extending our wide fleet of excavators, road rollers, wheel loaders and TLBs to include machines that comply with mining specifications and standards,” explains Lindo van der Merwe,
owner of VDM Plant Hire. “This expansion programme encompasses the upgrading of existing machines and the investment in new equipment which conforms with specific mine regulations. “The company will also be partnering with Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs), which have contracts withmines for equip- ment supply. This is in line with the current trend, where mine authorities extend con- tracts for plant hire to SMEs, rather than purchasing or renting equipment directly from suppliers or manufacturers.” Key machines in the VDM Plant Hire fleet are Hyundai excavators, which deliver high performance, reliable operation, fuel efficiency and safe operation. According to VDM Plant Hire customers, Hyundai wheeled excavators, which are easily manoeuvrable in all site conditions, are the popular choice, especially in wet and muddy conditions. Customers note that these robust machines offer cost-efficient operation – they boast low maintenance requirements, are easy to move from

FLSmidth optimises mill performance using acoustics The SAGwise™ total process control solu- tion for semi-autogenous (SAG) mills – developed by FLSmidth – promises effective SAG mill optimisation with lower energy consumption and wear part costs. Winston Mokoena, key account man- ager at FLSmidth, highlights that the solution reduces critical impacts inside the mill by up to 45 %. This adds life to wear lin- ers and grinding balls, helping to prolong liner life between maintenance and giving mills more uptime. mal feed to the next stage of the process, effectively facilitating better performance of downstream operations.” Among the challenges that mill optimi- sation tries to address is too little material in the mill, or too much. Too little leads to critical impacts between the grindingmedia and themill liners, damaging both elements without producing value. If the mill is over- filled with mined material, on the other hand, this results in grinding inefficiencies. The SAGwise system uses four or eight unidirectional or bidirectional audio sen- sors located in close proximity to the mill, which detect the analogue sounds and convert them into digital signals “SAGwise can improve mill production by 6 % and substantially reduce process variability,” says Mokoena. “This ensures that the mill provides a constant and opti-
