Anchor customised for mining client

Passport 360 allows project owners to set compliance requirements and standards against multiple projects. This avoids the issue of inconsistency across sites, which often results in confusion, unnecessary travel time, duplications, cost inflation and added risk. “Our focus on seamless integration means that Passport 360 can give con- tractors the ability to access back-end information with negligible security risk to the corporate client’s ERP system,” says Whitehead. “Contractors can access restricted information via Passport 360 without accessing the client’s servers or adding to the number of users allowed on Looking at the fischer EXA Express Anchor, Dry explains that it is a quick anchor for push-through and pre-posi- tioned installations. When the hexagon nut is tightened, the tapered bolt is pulled into the double expansion clips, expand- ing it effectively and quickly against the wall of the hole. The clip’s stainless steel construction means it is Class III corro- sion-resistant, making it ideal for arduous mining environments. Upat, website: www.upat.co.za Coupled with this is the fact that fischer products are guaranteed to perform in accordance with their correct specification and application. A broad range of fischer fixings is available that are suitable for most sectors of the mining industry. These range from massive mechanical anchors for underground mining to chemical anchors. Chemical anchors, in particular, are specified for rock faces with potential cracks or voids. Mechanical anchors are ideal for areas such as walkways, handrails, or electrical works, where the quality of the substrate is a known quantity.

When a mining client had a requirement for a special type of anchor for an under- ground application, it turned to leading supplier Upat, which subsequently cus- tomised a fischer EXA Express Anchor. It is now not only a standard item for the min- ing client but has turned into a substantial supply contract for Upat. The anchor was customised to include a cabling eye in its design, as opposed to the traditional two-component thread-on sys- tem. This is an example of the innovative

approach adopted by Upat in being suf- ficiently flexible to be able to respond to the specific needs of its clients, comments Clayton Dry, Technical Specialist – Mining & Utilities. “Being a premium, high-end engineer- ing brand, we are finding that fischer is being specified more and more for mining applications in particular. This is due largely to the industry’s stringent health and safety requirements, as anchors are always safety- critical components,”Dry explains.

Kumba deploys Passport 360 solution at four sites Kumba Iron ore has deployed Passport 360 at four of its sites tomanage compliance and streamline health and safety requirements. With over 8 000 employees, Kumba Iron Ore also deals with about 600 sub- contractors. Passport 360 was called upon to roll-out a cloud-based system to manage compliance at all operations in real-time, explains Siobahn Whitehead, Director and Co-Founder of Passport 360.

“Standing time equates to a loss of both production and revenue, and therefore compliance management has to be proac- tive,”Whitehead stresses. This was achieved by introducing Passport 360’s prequalification system, which nowallows Small, MediumandMicro- sized Enterprises (SMMEs) to be onboarded efficiently. Prior to the cloud-based system, Kumba relied on a paper-based system. This resulted in lengthy delays, as well as decreased compliance visibility. “The solution from Passport 360 has now allowed Kumba Iron Ore to streamline its contractor onboarding times, as well as cut costs,”Whitehead emphasises.

Such is the extent of Kumba’s opera- tions that it requires proactive monitoring in terms of compliance, combined with readily-accessible information in the event of any incident or Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) investigations.
