Roof support system ideal for unstable ground

Becker Mining South Africa’s locally manu- factured steel arch roof support system – which can be integrated with other sup- port elements – provides reliable tunnel support and safe working conditions in mining, as well as underground civil engi- neering projects, where unstable ground conditions exist. This robust steel arch roof support sys- tem, which is suitable for highly fractured rock in tunnels, roadways and under- ground chambers, plays a critical role in

tunnel rehabilitation, void filling and portal consolidation. “Becker Mining’s steel arch supports have a high load carrying capacity and dependable yielding of segments for enhanced safety and extended service life, even in poor underground condi- tions,” explains Tom Searle, Senior General Manager: Mechanical Capital Sales, Becker Mining South Africa. “Due to the adaptability of this system, which can be custom-designed and formed for spe- cific requirements, these high strength steel arch roof supports are suitable for any rock or soil types in any shape of excavation. “This steel arch system provides stable roof support and a safe working environ- ment during the clean up of a roof fall, or before and during seismic movements. This system also provides permanent sup- port to portal entrances and maintains critical areas of a mine or tunnel where roof bolting is not sufficient.” Local applications for Becker Mining’s Sales Engineer Philip Steyn adds. “This project was a major achievement for us, not only due to the large size of the unit, which is one of the biggest VSDs we have ever supplied, but the fact that we have introduced this mining producer to our electronics line-up. “A particular advantage of the VSD supplied is that the mine did not have to upgrade its control system in order to have it connected and up and running as soon as possible.” Such has been the success of the project that the mining producer is looking to pro- cure a secondVSD as a back-up unit – which

steel arch roof support systems include gold and platinummines, as well as under- ground civil engineering projects such as the Gautrain. These steel arch systems are also exported to African mines, with Zambia being a key user, and Australasia. In the mining sector, these steel arch support roof systems are used in various tunnel applications, including haulages, incline shaft portals and special shafts. The engineered TH29 steel arch profile, with balanced static values, ensures long term stand-up support solutions for friable ground conditions and where pressures are uncertain. Becker Mining’s arch sets also include clamps and steel lagging plates and ancil- lary equipment for secure installation and optimum performance and safety in arduous conditions. Lagging plates, recommended for use in friable ground conditions, are folded and seamed to each other by bolts. Thomas Searle, Becker Mining South Africa, tel (+27 11) 617-6300 SEW-EURODRIVE South Africa already has on hand if need be. “Our significant stock- holding is a critical factor in our success. It is all about being able to not only deliver what you promise but going above-and- beyond what is required.” A major advantage in this regard is the company’s Exports Department, which facilitates cross-border projects such as this one on the Zambian Copperbelt. “The back-up and support service offered by our Exports Department is crucial, especially as we cannot be on-site constantly. However, the necessary support structure is in place, and we do conduct regular in-country vis- its,” Steyn adds. SEW-EURODRIVE, tel (+27 11) 248-7000

Zambian VSD order fulfilled on fast-track basis When a copper mine in Zambia required a 110 kWVariable Speed Drive (VSD) urgently for a slurry application, it turned to SEW- EURODRIVE South Africa, which was not only able to supply the unit on a fast-track basis over the Christmas 2017 period but also assist with on-site commissioning.

As this was the first time that SEW- EURODRIVE South Africa was supplying this mine with a VSD, it decided to go the extra mile by dispatching an electronics field service technician to site to assist with the commissioning and set-up. “We also provided basic operator train- ing as part of our support service,” Export
