A new extreme-duty Flexicon™ flexible screw conveyor with purpose-built hop- Flexible screw conveyor from Flexicon per transfers bulk material received from front-end loaders.

Self-contained on an all-stainless skid equipped with forklifting tubes, the sys- tem can be deployed in multiple indoor or outdoor locations with a single power connection, conveying a broad range of free-flowing and non-free-flowing materials from fine powders to large aggregates including abrasives, corro- sives and materials with bulk densities up to 2 400 kg/m 3 . Material is conveyed at a 40 deg incline before discharging into downstream pro- cessing equipment or storage vessels. The simple design is said to deliver efficient performance and high reliability while reducing maintenance and cost. The system is also available constructed of carbon steel with durable industrial coatings. Shelving of up to 3 m high keeps all items neatly stacked, easy to identify and quick to retrieve. “The right goods in the right quantity in the right place means that when a cus- tomer asks for an item, we know that we have it and can find it without delays,” he says. As part of the company’s operation- wide system, the stockholding of the Kitwe warehouse can be viewed in real time by the supply chain management team in Johannesburg. Holtzhausen emphasises the importance of the ERP system’s ability to track trends in customer usage in a sys- tematic and methodical manner, to avoid any stock-outs on mine sites. Particularly at remote mines that take time to reach, lack of timeous access to spare parts and equip- ment can be costly in terms of operational downtime. The conveyor consists of a heavy- gauge stainless steel screw that rotates within a 200 mm stainless steel tube. Since the conveyor is driven at its top end by a 15 kW variable speed electric motor and gear reducer, material exits the discharge housing prior to contacting any seals or bearings. The tube interior and removable screw are smooth and crevice-free, allow- ing rapid, thorough cleaning. Rugged enough to withstand incidental contact with front-end loaders, the heavy- gauge stainless steel hopper holds up to 7 tonnes, or 3,4 m 3 , providing an ample supply of material for the high capacity conveyor to run continually as a front-end loader replenishes the material. and supply chain management system to match those at the company’s main distri- bution hub in Alrode near Johannesburg. “Our Kitwe branch now has a 100 % loca- tion-controlled warehouse that runs off our enterprise resource planning (ERP) system withWi-Fi-enabled scanners in place. This has resulted in the achievement of inventory accuracy rates in the high 90s,” says Luhann Holtzhausen, Weir Minerals Africa Supply Chain Director.“The technology and techni- cal capacity in this facility enable us to pick and bin items in real time. This will match any other system that cus- tomers may have seen globally and is also a benchmark within Zambia.” The new warehouse is all under one roof, with high visibility through natural and artificial lighting, where every product is clearly labelled with
