Vaughan says the three R100Es will be delivered to Steyn Diamante early in the new year. “We have also ordered a further three R100Es from the Volvo factory at Motherwell in Scotland so that we have stock in South Africa – which shows our confidence in the new truck.” He adds that a prototype R100E – South Africa was one of two countries selected for long-term trials of the truck during its devel- opment phase – remains in use with mining contractor Trollope Mining Services. “The orig- inal intention was for it to undergo a 3 000-hour test programme but in fact it’s now far exceeded this number of hours,” notes Vaughan. First unveiled at the Motherwell facility in April this year, an event attended by Modern Mining , the R100E builds on the DNA of the Terex Trucks range of rigid haulers. As Vaughan explains: “Volvo CE acquired Terex Trucks in 2014 and very soon thereafter started planning the Volvo-branded rigid hauler range. Although the development of the R100E has relied heav- ily on the expertise Terex Trucks built up over many years of manufacturing the TR-Series of rigid trucks, it represents an entirely new design. Its three siblings, the R45D, the R60D and the R70D, all with Volvo branding, are more closely based on their TR-Series predecessors although they feature considerable enhance- ments in areas such as safety and visibility.”
