The highly-abrasive andersite rock at Eikenhof doesn’t have any mercy for the equipment that handles it. Therefore, equipment lifecycles are much shorter, while wearable components wear much faster than in any other operation

Crusher liners are changed every two weeks across the different areas of the processing plant

“We change the fixed jaw crusher liners every six weeks and swing liner every four weeks. That’s how tough this rock is to equipment and wearable components. In any other normal aggregate processing environment, jaw crusher liners are only turned for the first time after six months,” explains Mgxekwa. In terms of equipment longevity, Mgxekwa says the jaw crusher used to last only five years before the management team resorted to a leading local mining and quarrying equipment manufacturer, Osborn, for a custom built crusher that could challenge the andersite rock. “We worked closely with Osborn to change the design of our jaw crusher. One of the key design interventions was the reinforcement of the crusher frame. The previous frame took mechanical stress and would break quite quickly,” explains Mgxekwa.

The uniaxial compressive strength of the rock makes Eikenhof the supplier of choice for a wide range of customer groups, all the way from asphalt and concrete producers, to lintel and tile manufacturers

Safety and environmental care are non-negotiables at Eikenhof. Testimony to this are the recent high scores in both the Aspasa ISHE and About Face audits
