ASPASA

In recent years, industry association Aspasa has broadened its membership scope and also extended its range of services to the surface mining industry to help members comply with different legislations that apply to their businesses, writes Munesu Shoko . BROADENING THE SCOPE I n 2017, Aspasa took the decision to broaden its scope from being just a sand and aggregates industry association, to cover several other areas of the surface mining industry. Industries such as salt, dimension stone, clay brick were added. Affiliation now includes producers in the mobile and contract crushing, formal quarry, rubble crushing, ash, coal, and borrow pit subsectors. Also included are associate memberships for organisations such as the National Occupational Safety Association, heavy machinery manufacturers and affiliate memberships for aggregate and sand, clay brick, salt and granite producers, among others. These are all required to be legally compliant with legis- lation such as the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA), environmental legislation and the Water Act. As the membership scope has been extended over the years, so too have the services offered by the association. Aspasa’s service offering covers legal compliance; local, international and gov- ernment liaison; health & safety audits and training; environmental audit training; technical and transport support; as well as training and education.
