Signify invests to broaden its UV-C lighting portfolio to meet the growing demand for disinfection

The Spazio Canon LED Track Spot SPAZIO LIGHTING aims to stay at the forefront of innovation in the South African lighting sector and therefore has imported the latest technology items. There is an ever-increasing need for LED light fit- tings that carry a long life span as well as an ex- tended, valid warranty that does not break the bank. One of the latest innovative products recently ac- quired is the Canon LED spot for 3-wire track. This fitting has a high power 30 W LED chip accompa- nied by an impressive lumen output of 3800 lm or 130 lumen per watt. This spot is available in black and white and in 3000 K and 4000 K. The Canon has an aluminium body and polycarbonate diffuser as well as an integrated driver and it also comes complete with a 3-wire track adaptor. This fitting has a clean design with a diameter of 80 mm and is 195 mm long. It can rotate 350° and tilt up to 90° which means that you can change the direction of the spot to any desired direction with ease. What makes this fitting so ground-breaking is the fact that it has an impressive 50 000-hour lifespan accompanied by a 5-year warranty. The benefit of installing this fitting in a commercial space requiring a high-power LED spot is that the Canon LED spot will not require frequent mainte- nance or replacement because even if it is switched on for long periods of time, it will still last for more than five years. In that period a traditional light source would have needed to be replaced multi- ple times and even most other retrofit LED fittings would have failed within this time frame. Integrated LED Downlights LED downlights are complete units with integral LED light sources. The light fixture is designed around the light source which generally has a long- er lifespan than its GU10 counterparts. Integrated LED downlights offer a wide spread of light, result- ing in fewer hot spots and even light distribution. Certain models offer a colour changing option as a standard feature, with a choice of warm, cool and daylight variations. Integrated LED downlights usu- ally come with warranties and long-life expectan- cies. However, when the light source does fail, the entire unit has to be replaced. GU10 LED Downlights A GU10 is a light fixture that can be fitted with a variety of GU10 light bulbs/lamps. When the lamp reaches the end of its lifespan, it is easy to replace – simply remove and replace with a new lamp. GU10 lamps are typically more affordable and there is a variety of types on the market to choose from. One of the benefits of GU10s is that installation is rela- tively easy, without having to replace the entire light fixture. GU10 lamps generally don’t last as long as the light source in integrated LED downlights.

and controls to ensure that they only operate when people and animals are not present. Other products include mobile, freestanding UV-C luminaires that can be wheeled into a hotel room or used to disinfect surfaces on public transport such as buses and trains. For the disinfection of objects, Signify launches a range of safe and quick- to-use UV-C disinfection chambers. These chambers are used in offices and municipal buildings to disinfect visitor tags, phones, bags, laptops and wallets in a matter of seconds. In stores they are ideal for disinfecting returned items, glasses or clothes tried on in a changing room. UV-C fixtures can also be used inside surface disinfection tunnels. In North America, a large retailer is piloting a UV-C tunnel for disinfecting shopping trolleys. In India, a hotel plans to use a Signify UV-C tunnel for disinfecting guests’ bags at check-in. To complement its portfolio, Signify recently acquired the assets of Ger- micidal Lamps & Applications (GLA), a small, Netherlands-based company with extensive expertise in UV-C disinfection solutions. The deal includes GLA’s upper-room UV-C air disinfection portfolio as well as deep application knowl- edge. “The assets and know-how acquired from GLA will help us to accelerate

SIGNIFY is increasing its UV-C lighting production capacity and expanding its UV-C product portfolio. The company is leveraging more than 35 years of ex- pertise in UV-C lighting to address the growing global need for the disinfection of air, surfaces and objects. By increasing capacity and broadening the UV-C portfolio, Signify is helping keep people safe in a world that’s adjusting to a new normal. Its UV-C light- ing is well-proven and trusted as an effective disinfectant. This was recently validated in a laboratory test by Boston University, showing that Signify’s UV-C light sources inactivate the virus that causes COVID-19 in a matter of seconds. This is crucial as it comes at a time when organisations are seeking ways to continue operations and provide service in a safe environment. Signify’s new UV-C product range includes luminaires and chambers for a wide variety of professional applications. “We have introduced 12 families of UV-C lighting fixtures specifically designed to disinfect air, surfaces and ob- jects. These products target different customer segments ranging from offices, schools, gyms, retail stores, warehouses, as well as on public transport,” says Harsh Chitale, leader of Signify’s Digital Solutions division. Part of the range are UV-C fixtures which are ideal for the deep disinfection of surfaces in offices, schools and restrooms. They are equipped with sensors

the development of our roadmap of UV-C based upper-room air disinfection systems. We plan to make these products avail- able across the world soon,” says Paul P.J. Peeters, leader of Signify’s Digital Solutions Europe. The upper-room air disinfection lumi- naires can be used with people in the room, as they are installed at a height which, in combination with shielding and optics, pre- vents exposure to the UV-C light source. Air in the upper part of the room is constantly disinfected using UV-C irradiation and natu- ral convection of airflow in the room. This makes these perfect for use in schools, offices, gyms, retail outlets and other high- contact areas. For more than 35 years, Signify has been at the forefront of UV technology, and has a proven track record of innovation in UV-C lighting. Signify’s UV-C lighting is designed, installed, and used according to the prod- uct-specific safety instructions, and manu- factured using well-controlled industrial processes.
