DYNAMIC YET FUNCTIONAL LIGHTING FOR CONSOL GLASS STORE MAGNET LIGHTING – a division of the Magnet Group – has completed a lighting installation at a recently-opened Consol Glass retail outlet, at Cor- nubia Mall in Mt. Edgecombe, just north of Durban. “Design objectives of this project entailed a par- ticular focus on lighting aesthetics to accentuate the different shapes, styles and colours of glassware on display,” says Brian Howarth, managing director of Magnet. “Apart from creating the right ambience, the lighting system needed to be easily adjustable to accommodate a dynamic showroom where lay- out, configuration and merchandise are regularly changed. Considering the numerous applications for lighting in the store, functionality was an important factor in the design.” The Magnet design team chose a colour tem- perature of 3000 Kelvin (K) to showcase Consol’s glassware. This warm light has minimal refraction or glare off translucent products and creates a warm ambience in the shop. To accommodate the request for adjustability, the team selected 24 W SLV spot light fittings, which are mounted on a tailor-made suspended spot and track system. This flexible system allows the retailer to adjust the direction and location of the luminaire, highlight and promote specific products, or change the layout of the store, without difficulty. According to Magnet’s lighting specialists, it is im- portant to elect a high Colour Rendering Index (CRI) to ensure indoor lighting is as natural as possible. For this reason, the SLV Structec system – with ad- vanced design and LED technologies – was selected for the project. The system has a 3000 K colour temperature for warm illumination and a CRI of be- tween 80 and 85 for natural light. The Consol Glass warehouse – situated at the back of the store – required a cooler temperature (5000 K), which is more functional. For this storage area, with a height greater than 5 m, the design team selected the MARS LED Ebay linear lighting system. Its locally-manufactured luminaires have an exterior driver, allowing the product to run at a cooler tem-

perature, and boost performance. The MARS LED lighting range has been designed for maximum energy saving, without compromising on lux levels. This high-performance system offers high quality, low glare, light and is fitted with a ‘plug and play’ configuration, which facilitates quick and simple installation. Magnet Lighting’s understanding of lighting sys- tems – coupled with design and installation services, in-house testing facilities and experienced lighting engineers – ensures enhanced aesthetics and ener- gy-efficiency in all installations.
