SOLAR STREET LIGHTING SOLUTION FOR MINE INTERSECTIONS

F our intersections leading to Black Rock Mine in the Northern Cape have been equipped with BEKA Schréder’s solar lighting solutions to provide a safer environment for pedestrians and motorists. Black Rock Mine is located in Black Rock, a small town in South Africa’s largest and most sparsely populated province, the Northern Cape. The intersections leading towards the different sections of the mine have always been in total darkness and, for the safety of pedestrians and motorists, it was decided to illuminate them all. Because of the isolated location, a complete electrical reticulation would have been too ex- pensive, and a solar street lighting solution was installed. This environmentally friendly, solar-powered LED street lighting installation requires almost no maintenance and zero running costs. The LEDlume-midi 36 LED/55 W luminaire, mount- ed at 8 m above road level, was chosen for this project. The solar panels and battery boxes are secured by tamper-proof screws to prevent theft. Furthermore, the BEKA Schréder solar module has been engineered for all geographi- cal locations in Africa, and has been designed to operate reliably at a high light output over a 12 to 14 hour period. It has sufficient autonomy

(PCBs). Once a critical temperature is reached, which could harm the lifetime of the LEDs, the current is reduced to ensure safe operating temperatures of the LEDs. This safeguards the LEDs and ensures that the long lifetime of up to 100 000 hours (L70) is achieved. The slim, aesthetical design is optimised for LED charac- teristics. BEKA Schréder locally develops and manu- factures energy-efficient LED lighting products that are designed and suitable for local condi- tions. The company worked with FCE Consulting

to cater for up to two continuous overcast or rainy days, in order to continue its reliable night operation. This high quality solar lighting sys- tem contributes to green and sustainable en- ergy source initiatives. The LEDlume-midi is the LED luminaire of choice since it is designed and manufactured in South Africa, and therefore takes Africa’s en- vironments and conditions into account. This is evident in the luminaire’s design. A unique ther- mal sensor technique monitors the tempera- ture of the LEDs on the printed circuit boards

Engineers, Black Rock Mine, and the Kimberley Roads Department to provide this successful so- lar lighting solution for the project.

NEW LIGHTING SYSTEM AT ST GEORGE’S PARK CRICKET GROUND

LONG-LIFE LED FOR GENERAL LIGHTING T he market for LED lighting is changing rapidly and the demand for pro- fessional components with long lifetimes and extraordinary robustness is growing. In announcing the new professional Osconiq S3030, Osram Opto Semiconductors is successfully facing up to these challenges. The LEDs are state-of-the-art components designed to meet professional demands in various general lighting applications and characterised by long life, high performance and first-class reliability. Osconiq S3030 is Osram’s entry into the professional mid-power market. The LED is ideal for use in outdoor and industrial lighting. It offers customers LED lighting of the highest quality and great durability even in extreme operat- ing conditions. The individual components provide flexibility in forward volt- age and luminous flux with an exceptional lifetime of 75 000 hours even at high temperatures. Together with an optimised phosphor, lead frame and chip design, the development of the Osconiq S3030 raises LED technology to a new level of performance with an impressive efficiency of 146 lm/W. The 0.2 W applications are especially suitable for linear lighting and fluorescent tube replacement. Overall, Osconiq S3030 achieves competitive values for reliability, lifetime and brightness. “With Osconiq S3030 we have succeeded in developing an LED that is ideal for professional lighting solutions in outdoor, indoor and industrial applications”, said Wong Kum Yih, Marketing Manager for General Lighting at Osram Opto Semiconductors. “With high-grade materials such as the proven Osram designed sapphire chip and robust silicone, we have taken the stability of LED lighting to the next level. In addition to outstanding lifetime values, our customers also benefit from superior quality and improved performance.” Osconiq S3030 is available in two versions (CRI 70 or 80) with a power rating of 1 W at 6 V and a luminous flux of 138 to 148 lm. The footprint of both versions is comparatively small at 3.0 mm x 3.0 m x 3.0 mm. The colour tempera-

tems being introduced at sporting grounds in the country” he said. “They will cement South Africa as a choice venue for international cricketing and sporting events.” Maritz used 6 x 40 m galvanised lighting masts and a total of 306 LED luminaires (4 x 1150 W and 302 x 1400 W). The DMX (digital multiplex) protocol used in the system gives the stadium control over its lighting needs. It allows a control panel to communicate with each of the 306 lights via a gateway and fibre cabling. The lighting fixtures flash after every four or six hit by the batsmen, and when a wicket is taken. “The client and all of us,” said Maritz, “are very excited about the flashing and chasing lights. This element adds to the whole IPL theatrical theme. We will also put on light shows to draw crowds into the stadium.” St George’s Park is renowned for hosting some of the most exciting test and one day international matches. The introduction of the Mzansi Super League takes the stadium into an exciting future that augers well for the city of Port Elizabeth and opens a new chapter in the history of cricket in the region. The new lighting reflects the broadmindedness of global cricket to bring the game to the people of the world. Maritz says the Mzansi Super League is positioned to become a success with keen international interest from all cricketing nations, and lighting will play a major role in bringing the league to cricket fans across the world. Already successful at major sporting arenas, the new system at St George’s Park is set to ensure it becomes a stadium of choice for future international showdowns.

ST GEORGE’S PARK cricket ground is fully prepared for a new chapter in its history: the Mzansi Super League, South Africa’s own T20 competition. To be ready for this exciting cricket event, in which many of the world’s top cricketing stars will participate, the stadium revamped its lighting system. Commissioned to install a state-of-the-art Musco Lighting system, Maritz Electrical has covered all bases. It offers St George’s Park one of the best lighting solutions in the world. Already in use at many stadia across the globe, the system offers significantly reduced maintenance and energy costs and a 10-year guarantee. With HD broadcasting the norm for all major sporting events, the Musco Lighting system meets the demands of high definition broadcast quality, and is more than adequate for HD television cameras. Its daylight quality lighting also significantly improves the experience for spectators. According to Maritz Electrical’s Kurt Maritz, the stadium demanded a solution that would provide spectators and tel- evision viewers the quality of lighting the world has come to expect at high-profile events. “The new lighting system meets the ICC and CSA speci- fied lighting levels of 2500 lux (vertical) on the wicket and 1800 lux (vertical) in the outfield,” said Maritz. “Vertical light- ing levels are specified for televised matches, especially high definition television cameras.” Further to the specific lux level requirements, the sys- tem was specified to be LED, and not metal halide. Maritz explained that St George’s Park is the first LED-illuminated cricket stadium in the world using the Musco Lighting sys- tem – the recently completed LED-lit stadium at Boland Park uses a different system. “We are excited about the new sys-

ture ranges from 2700 to 6500 K. The beam angle of 120° and the extremely low thermal resist- ance of around 8.9 K/W make the LED ideal for outdoor lighting. In addition to the technical improve- ments, Osconiq S3030 features professional grade materials such as high-quality long-life packag- ing subcomponents and propri- etary coatings. These materials have been validated by extensive robustness testing under extreme overload conditions. What’s more, the EMC (epoxy moulding com- pound) lead frame material pro- vides the basis for much longer life and better reliability than con- ventional PPA and PCT materials.
