HIGH-INTENSITY COLOUR AND WHITE LEDS

SOFT PANEL LIGHTS FOR ON-LOCATION COVERAGE OF ROYAL WEDDING

D esigned to deliver a significant lighting punch in terms of candela and lumen density, the high-density portfolio of Lumileds LUXEON CZ optically advanced colour and white LED emitters, offers an optimal LED solution for a range of lighting market sectors including: architecture and entertainment; colour-tuneable lamps; and speciality lighting use for emer- gency vehicles. The LUXEON CZ colour portfolio includes a full spectrum of colour choices including red, red-orange, amber, PC amber (phosphor converted), mint, green, cyan, blue and royal blue. Dominant or peak wavelengths for the devices range from 624-634 nm for red, to 520-540 nm for green, to 440-460 nm for royal blue. Other characteristics of the colour portfolio include luminous/radiant flux measurements ranging from: 31 mW, typically, for red; up to 425 mW, typically, for royal blue; all with a tolerance of ±6.5 %. The white LED series includes devices with 3000, 4000, 5000 and 5700 K colour temperatures (CCT) with respective typical luminous flux measurements of 99, 109, 110 and 110 mW. In addition, typical luminous efficacy (lumens per watt) is 133 for the three higher CCT devices. Offering an industry-leading hot/cold factor and an exceptionally low thermal resistance, each device in the LUXEON CZ range comes in a small and symmetrical 2 x 2 mm 2 package. The Lumileds LUXEON CZ portfolio of LED emitters is available from RS Components.

LIGHTING DESIGN GROUP (LDG) , a global leader in television lighting design, chose Litepanels’ new Gemini LED soft panels for international broadcast cov- erage of the May 19 wedding of Britain’s Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Under contract by several major news organisa- tions, LDG relied on 12 Gemini panels to light the networks’ temporary sets over- looking Windsor Castle in London. “We have been using Litepanels products for years, and they’ve given us consistent and reliable service. We keep coming back to Litepanels products for a wide range of lighting applications,” said Niel Galen, senior lighting designer, Lighting Design Group. “Gemini is a welcome addition to the world of LED soft lights. Its lighter weight and smaller form factor were big plusses for this

They provided a fantastic soft base with strong and consistent output, which can be difficult to find with other fixtures, and their comparatively low power consumption was a big help since we were running off generator power."

shoot because we had very critical weight restrictions for the install, given the age of the building. “In our lighting design for the wedding coverage, we were going for a very pleasing soft, but also sparkly, light,” Galen added. “The Geminis were an important component and performed beautifully.

A total of 10 000 LED street lights are set to be installed in Lagos, Ni- geria by a United Kingdom firm, Low Energy Designs (LED) Limited. The Lagos State Government recently entered into a partnership with the UK Company. The deal will cover 300 km across the State and is expected to cost US $7m and create job opportunities for citizens in the country. The delivery of the project is projected to take 12 months. State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode confirmed the reports during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the partnership held at Lagos House, Alausa, Ikeja, and said that the development was a major milestone and a positive paradigm shift in the provision of street lighting in the region. He further explained that the successful commencement of the partnership signifies a positive progress to the Light Up Lagos Project, which is a special initiative of his administration. It comprises of street lighting, community elec- trification and an embedded power programme. “We have about 33 000 street lights in Lagos under the Lagos State Electricity Board and with the additional 10 000 street lights, we are going to have approximately 31% of our entire street light infrastructure up. This is a major significant development,” he said. Alan Parker, Chief Executive Officer of LED UK Limited, pointed out that over the next 12 months, a British and Nigerian consortium would work to retrofit major roads in the State with urban regeneration projects in Ikoyi, Ikeja and Victoria Island. The contract includes the provision of an intelligent control system for real time operation of the LED streetlights. This technology is said to reduce overall energy consumption, lower carbon emissions and allows the customer to be in control of light intensity. Energy Efficiency Africa Municipalities across 40 African countries, such as Govan Mbeki Municipality, Emfuleni Local Municipality and Harare Municipality are looking to reduce their energy consumption by procuring innovative lighting solutions. As Af- rica’s largest energy exhibition, Energy Efficiency World Africa creates a plat- form where leading solution providers can showcase a wide range of tech- nologies aimed at helping transform and innovate the African energy sector.
