Area lighting for Citrusdal Wastewater Treatment Works

Spazio Lighting’s solar range

BEKA Schréder has supplied the area lighting for Citrusdal Wastewater Treat- ment Works, situated in the Western Cape province, South Africa. The end- user was very satisfied with the high- quality lighting solution, as well as the subsequent cost savings of this instal- lation. The lighting solution consisted of ZIYA-1 luminaires on 8m BEKAPOLES, and OMNISTAR-MICRO floodlights in- stalled on the buildings. These products were chosen for their high-quality ma- terials and cost-effectiveness. The South-African designed and manufactured ZIYA LED streetlight range offers a superior lumen / watt ratio to deliver a high-performing, energy-efficient lighting solution at an affordable price for various landscapes, including pedestrian zones, roads, and general area lighting. The ZIYA range comprises the ZIYA-1 and ZIYA-2 with aluminium housing, and the ZIYA-E with calcium-filled Polypropylene hous- ing. Precise on-site setting is facilitated through an incorporated inclination system. Built to withstand high ambi- ent temperatures and vandalism (IK 10) and with a high Ingress Protection level (IP 65), the ZIYA range provides a sustainable performance over time. The ZIYA range is the ideal tool to shorten the payback time of an LED lighting in- stallation and to provide the best return on investment. The BEKAPOLE is a glassfibre rein- C urb appeal – it is something everyone wants their home to have, yet few people know how to achieve it using lighting. To make a home stand out in an impres- sive way to approaching guests or passers-by, well-considered outdoor lighting is key. Use uplights to highlight a home’s best features and add dimension. By posi- tioning fixtures strategically, you can ac- centuate pillars, stonework, arches and any other interesting architectural fea- tures. Just be sure not to shine the light directly into any of the home’s windows. You may have to play around with an- gling the beam, but when done correctly, this type of light makes a home look impressive to anyone approaching or driving by. Uplight architecture to add dimension Silhouette landscaping fea- tures Silhouetting is another technique used to enhance the curb appeal of the front of home. It involves positioning light fixtures in a way that creates a silhou- ette effect out of trees and bushes. If the front of the home does not have any interesting architectural features and the landscaping is not exciting either, you can create visual inter- est by using lighting to create areas of contrasting light and shadow. This technique is particularly useful if the owners have moved into a newly built home and are waiting for plants and trees to grow. Create contrast of light and shadow

general area and perimeter floodlight- ing, mining areas, food and beverage, as well as manufacturing and processing plants. The OMNISTAR range has not only been developed for performance and reliability, but also with quality of light output in mind. Furthermore, the added advantages of an LED solution are provided: low energy consumption, improved visibility with white light, lim- ited maintenance, and longer life. The company is proud to be associated with Kaltron Electrical Engineering and Engineering- X in providing a successful area lighting solution for this project.

forced polyester (GRP) pole range and is manufactured in South Africa. The BEKAPOLE has many advantages, be- cause it is sustainable, non-corrosive, maintenance-free, light in weight, non- conductive, long lasting, versatile, and vandal-resistant. The BEKAPOLE has virtually unlimited applications. It can be manufactured to any requirement relat- ing to the number and configuration of luminaires to be mounted, inclusive of any special colour. The OMNISTAR-MICRO is the small- est of the OMNISTAR floodlight fam- ily and has also been designed and manufactured in South Africa. This LED floodlight range is available in the standard stirrup mount version and an optional pole mount version. This versa- tility makes it suitable for use in various environments, which include outdoor

O ver the past few years, Spazio has identified a need in the South African market for good quality, efficient solar products. Solar lighting has many advantages, a few of which include the following: • Solar powered fittings are not de- pendent on the power grid for any source of energy. They come com- plete with a rechargeable battery that gets charged by the sun dur- ing the day and then switches on at night. This means that solar power is environmentally friendly, green, clean renewable energy. • Solar energy is very cost effective in that it does not contribute to your monthly electricity bill and seeing as there is no electrical wiring required, it makes for much easier installation. Spazio Lighting supplies a range of so- lar fittings with a strong focus on mod- ern design. Its range consists of the fol- lowing: • The Sunlume is a dimmable solar or power rechargeable table lantern with a die-cast aluminium body and clear polycarbonate diffuser. It gives off 3 W power and is warm white with an IP rating of 54, making it suitable for exterior use in inland conditions. • The Astral is a solar rechargeable wall fitting with an aluminium body and polycarbonate diffuser. This fit- ting includes a motion sensor which

means that the fitting will brighten up when it picks up movement. This is a great way to conserve its power. • Angler and Polco are both solar powered wall fittings made up of aluminium with polycarbonate dif- fusers. These fittings include motion sensors and a lithium-ion battery. The fittings run at 2.2 W with an IP rating of 54. • The Cage and Vertigo are both so- lar powered bollards standing at 245 mm and 500 mm respectively. They both are made up of alumini- um with polycarbonate diffusers and include motion sensors. The Cage also includes a spike accessory. • Similar to the Cage and Vertigo, the Fold and Rondo are both solar pow- ered exterior bollards made up of die-cast aluminium and polycarbon- ate diffusers. They both also come complete with motion sensors. • The Focus solar fitting is a garden spot complete with a spike to secure it to a soft exterior surface, for exam- ple, grass, ground, etc. It is made up of die-cast aluminium with a poly- carbonate diffuser. This fitting does not have a motion sensor. • The Sunflood and Sunpack are both wall mounted solar fittings made up of ABS. They include a Lithium-ion battery and motion sensor.

that complement each other and the style of the home. Consider the materi- als used and the colour of the fixtures. For example, rustic farm-style fixtures may look out of place in the garden of a modern contemporary home. Use a timer Install the lighting on a timer. If owners are having guests over in the evening, they may be too busy preparing things inside the house to remember to flick a few switches to turn on the landscape light- ing. This means guests will arrive at a dark exterior and will not see the impressive lighting setup on arrival. It is also a safety concern. While outdoor lighting enhances a home’s curb appeal, it also plays a vital role in safety and security. Having it set to a timer means that people will not ar- rive home to darkness and the home and garden will be illuminated when they are away.

Use downlights to create a moonlight effect Install downlights high up in trees or on tall structures to give the impression of moonlight washing over an area. This lighting should be gentle, creating a soft glow that can guide guests up to the front door or illuminate pretty flower beds. While shadows add dimension, they can also make certain features look harsh. Avoid this by using the cross lighting technique. This requires the lighting of an object, for example a gar- den statue, using two separate fixtures in order to achieve a softer, more subtle lighting effect. Cross-light architectural or landscape features Select fixtures in an appropri- ate style While outdoor lighting is functional when switched on, it also needs to look cohe- sive during daylight hours.
