The Halo by willowlamp

willowlamp took part in Euroluce at the Salone del Mobile for the first time this April. Renowned on the South African decor scene for its design- forward and inspiring creations, the company has previously showcased at African and Middle Eastern trade shows. Now expanding its reach into Eu- rope’s illustrious design elite, willowlamp introduced the Milanese audience to a careful curation of its most striking designs. As the first South African designer lighting company to show its pieces on this prestigious platform, willowlamp cements its status as an innovator and market leader. Founder and creative director Adam Hoets studied architecture which gives his works a complexity and sophistication of structure and concept. “My journey began as an architect, which has been invaluable in shaping my ‘design’ mind. I decided on architecture becausemy reasoning was that I could be an architect and also be an artist but not the other way round,” he says. Hoets made the transition from architecture to lighting design in 2005 due, in part, to his goal of developing a marketable design-related product. The variety of projects that Hoets has overseen since the inception of willowlamp is evidence of his confluence between architectural and artistic flair. Hoets’ signature steel-plate and ball-chain combination is another identifying factor, which sets itself apart for the endless permutations his ingenious construction methods allow. He derives inspiration for his designs chiefly from the world around himand sacred geometry. “This is nature in its purest, highest state and is something I am very interested in and continuously explore in my work,” he says. willowlamp demonstrate its varying but complemetary influences (art, nature, geometry) through pieces such as the Flower of Life, a chandelier that owes its name to a shape commonly associated with a symbol in sacred geometry, or The Halo which draws inspiration from Gaudi’s famous Sagrada Familia cathedral, and The Southern Flame, a one-off art piece that encapsulates the magical merging of form and function that has made it a showstopper internationally. All of willowlamp’s works have this in common however – they are statement collector’s items that hold court in a space and make a mark on the memory.

JAPANESE STADIUM INSTALLS LED PITCH LIGHTING USING ROBOTICS

SIGNIFY has installed its connected lighting system, Interact Sports, at the Toyota Stadium in Aichi, Japan. It’s the first outdoor stadium in Japan to install connected LED pitch lighting in combination with high performance Philips ArenaVision LEDs. Unique in the project was the use of robotic measurement while installing the connected lighting system. The robotic measurement is part of Signify’s innovative commissioning method. It helps to reduce installation time and significantly improves accuracy compared to traditional measurement methods. Aiming of floodlights, horizontal illuminance, colour temperature and rendering are just a few of the components put to the test. The total service package installed in Japan’s first LED outdoor stadium includes software-based lighting design, 3D visualisation and video aiming. Already in operation in numerous stadiums around the world, Signify’s innovative LED light- ing system brings an immersive bowl lighting experience by seamlessly integrating colour changing floodlights alongside entertainment SYLVANIA has launched a new interactive guide, ‘Introducing Your New Operational Manager,’ to help office owners and facilities managers create a healthier, more productive modern built environment. With illness in the office estimated to cost European businesses £77 billion a year, the new eBook shows how lighting has the un- tapped potential to improve employee well- being, productivity and ultimately profitability. “With over 100 years’ experience of light- ing office spaces, we have a vast amount of knowledge within the company as this new e- book demonstrates,” comments David Neale, Marketing Manager for Sylvania UK. “Our full product solution includes innovative ranges from architectural lighting specialist Concord as well as Sylvania. This guide will help our customers understand lighting in a modern office space as well as ensure they have all

floodlights with 554 energy-efficient LED lighting fixtures across its 45 000-seat stadium. It uses Interact Sports Lighting management software to control and manage Philips ArenaVision LED Field of Play (pitch) lighting. It combines seven different light distribution characteristics which make it possible to design lighting best suited for each player’s action.

the information they need to install high qual- ity, energy efficient and aesthetically pleasing lighting designs.” In the face of changing and increasingly stringent regulations as well as rising energy costs, business owners, operators and fa- cilities managers are constantly looking for ways to improve business operations and the bottom line. From demystifying the lat- est regulations, to how to empower employee productivity, the guide shows how the built environment can take the role of the Chief Operating Officer, giving valuable insight into, and control over, the operations of every area of the modern office. Richard Turner, Specification Luminaires Business Unit Director for Sylvania, explains: “It is well documented that the EU’s building stock is ageing and inefficient, with about 35% of buildings now over 50 years old and lighting moving colour spots. The new lighting meets the stringent broadcast standards for flicker-free Ultra-HD 4K television and super slow-motion ac- tion replays, people at home can clearly see every detail and emotion on the pitch. Stadiums that already use Inter- act Sports include Wanda Metropolitano stadium of Atlético de Madrid and Ju- ventus’ Allianz Stadium. Toyota Stadium upgraded its pitch

SMART OFFICE LIGHTING: THE NEW CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

only 25% of them considered to be energy efficient. Couple that with the increasingly stringent regulatory climate and rising cost of illness, and it’s clear to see there is great potential to lay the foundation for a healthier and more productive environment. “By simply taking a more holistic approach to the modern office and seeing lighting as a contributor rather than a cost to the business, owners and operators can make better use of the space available, and the wellness and therefore productivity of the people within it. The new eBook looks at the practical ways owners and facilities managers can put the built environment to work, exploring the role it plays in employee wellbeing and how to apply smart lighting that works for your office and your balance sheet. “Making the switch from halogen to LED lighting alone, can have a significant positive

effect however; those who choose to make the switch to smart lighting will reap the greatest benefits. For example, using occupancy sensors to dim or switch off lighting when a room is unoccupied can reduce electricity use by 30%. But it’s not just occupancy usage, intelligent lighting solutions are also giving business owners and employees the power to actively manage and adapt their lighting depending on oc- cupancy usage, machine functionality, room temperature and natural daylight levels. In that way, the office becomes the Chief Operating Of- ficer, providing valuable insights and data that can be used to adapt and control all areas of operations and ultimately improve productivity and profitability.” To learn more about how to transform the built environment, visit the ‘Introducing Your New Operational Manager’ eBook, at https://bit.ly/2DqXIqQ
