DETECTABLE CABLE TIES HELP MITIGATE CONTAMINATION RISKS IN F&B SECTOR

for compliancy with food safety legislation. Made of polymeric material that contains ad- ditives to increase the cable ties’ magnetism and density, the Ty-Rap® detectable cable tie can be picked up by metal detectors and X-ray equipment. In addition, the cable tie’s bright blue colour makes it stand out, which is vital in food processing applications. When made of poly- propylene, the cable ties have buoyancy for vis- ual detection in liquid processing applications. The T&B range of detectable cable ties has proven to be easier to use than conventional or

ABB Ty-Rap cable ties offer a non-magnetic, stainless steel locking barb that firmly anchors inside the tie head and ensures strong and long lasting fastening under demanding conditions. The surface is ribbed and stippled to prevent the ties from slipping under vibration conditions. Thomas & Betts, a member of the ABB Group, offers more than 500 types of cable tie and a range of accessories and tools. From flame retardant products developed for the rail industry to a solution for the food and beverage industry, the focus is on supporting

customers with specific needs. According to Ian Vrey, product marketing director for Installation Products, ABB South Africa, Ty-Rap® continues to focus on innovation in order to meet a wide range of application requirements. It has had particular success with the Detectable Ty-Rap®, which supports food and beverage customers with their efforts to mitigate the risk of product contamination and product recalls or, even worse, brand reputational damage. It enables customers to put in place a compliant HACCP system (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points)

ENVIROFLEX BASIC

W ith the introduction of Enviroflex basic, HUBER+SUHNER has ex- panded its portfolio of halogen free RF cables. Thanks to mechanical compat- ibility with RG cables, Enviroflex products can easily be designed-in, using existing connec- tors. High-temperature RG types contain PTFE and FEP. HUBER+SUHNER Enviroflex replac- es these expensive, halogen-containing poly- mers with cross-linked PE and RADOX®. The temperature range is limited to 105 °C, which is sufficient in many cases. Enviroflex basic further cuts down on cost by using common PE dielectrics and LSFH jackets. The maxi- mum allowed temperature is consequently reduced to 85 °C. Silver plating of the braids is replaced by a layer of tin and prices can therefore be reduced up to 50% compared to the initial RG type. Standard RG cables with solid PE di- electric have a PVC jacket. Although inex- pensive, PVC contains chlorine and other chemicals that can have adverse effects on the environment. HUBER+SUHNER also offers Enviroflex basic alternatives for these RG types. By replacing silver with tin plated braids, prices can still be reduced up to 20%. Customer awareness of environmental factors started years ago, which is why En- viroflex has been popular since its launch two decades ago, when HUBER+SUHNER set a new market standard. The blue line on the jacket is a distinctive feature of the product series and the tradition continues with Enviroflex basic featuring a printed stripe of HUBER+SUHNER logos. A survey conducted by the European Copper Institute has found a strong economic and saving potential to upsizing cables. The sav- ing could amount on average to 20 TWh per year, with an estimated annual saving of 4 TWh for do- mestic refrigerators, 2 TWh for domestic washing machines and 13,5 TWh for air conditioners and fans. According to the Institute’s Fernando Nuño, this suggests it’s time to focus on addressing and regulating cable sizing. The survey, conducted by Egemin Consulting, looked at the relationship be- tween cable sizing and energy savings. Cable up- sizing could also lead to reduced emissions and the creation of additional jobs. However, market research across the European Union showed that, although the industry is aware of the long-term economic and environmental benefits to cable up- sizing, the initial installation cost is seen as a signifi- cant obstacle.
