Notwithstanding the heat loss, the light output became brighter and these came in different shapes and lengths, thereby becoming a sought-after lighting system for industry, while some households today still use smaller sizes in kitchens and garages. Lest we forget, and using same principle, we also had the Sodium Vapour Lamps. These are also slowly but surely being replaced as they too are inefficient. For them to achieve full brightness, a high inrush current is required first to vapourise the gas (sodium) until it is electrically charged to give the output light. However, thanks to evolving technology which helps us cut costs wherever we can, we have seen the ballasts being reduced from heavy copper filled ballasts to smaller electronic ones, which use a small Cable Diagnostics Course WHEN: 29-30 October WHERE: Randburg, Johannesburg MORE INFORMATION: www.hvtraining.co.za

The downfall of filament bulbs is that they are inefficient compared to others. The efficacy rate is so low that it is uneconomical to use them in households, offices or industries. Efficacy rate refers to the rate at which incoming energy is converted with minimal or very little loss. An incandescent light bulb has a filament, and an inert gas inside, but as we all know, where there is a coil there is resistance, and where there is resistance and a current flow, there is heat. This heat is generally a ‘loss’ as it is not used for anything and neither is it recovered or converted to be used in another form of energy. This loss is referred to as dissipated energy and scientifically referred to as ‘I2R’ losses, and therefore regarded a waste. Due to advancements in technology, fluorescent lights came as an alternative. In the early days, they were not very efficient KNX building automation WHEN: 15-19 October

current to achieve the same effect. We are now in the LED (Light Emitting Diode) era. Less copper and more electronics equals saving the ‘ching’. However, I urge all contractors to be very wary of cheap products flooding the markets these days. That saving mentality can be an expensive exercise if we do not check these products properly. I recently bought slimline 150 W floodlights, marked boldly as ‘IP65’. Surprise, surprise! We had some showers, not heavy rain, a day after installation and the next day the fitting was all fogged up and full of moisture. I ended up taking it back to the supplier, which was an unnecessary inconvenience. This fitting was said to be hermetically sealed, yet the seal failed. So, when going LED, make sure the Ingress Protection (IP) rating is not just a marketing gimmick.
