CUSTOM LIGHTING FOR CTICC

L ocal manufacturer, Regent Lighting Solu- tions (RLS), was part of the team involved in the expansion to the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC), a complex project with various special requirements. Working closely with architects VDMMA and electrical engineers Mott Macdonald, the team used its vast experience in custom and unique requests to custom design and manufacture aesthetically pleasing, energy efficient fittings, with an ultimate requirement to achieve Green Star ratings. The design intent was to supply and manufacture lighting fixtures for the 10 000 m² halls, public concourse and all meeting rooms. RLS produced 3D renderings of the proposed fittings that would meet the requirements, determined the appropriate lighting calculations through variations in lighting designs and ultimately, after 3D printing the proposed end product, manufactured sample fittings that could be inspected for final approval. The key exterior element of the project was the development of an external bollard, the Thia, which was designed to complement the urban flow of the pedestrian walkways with the need to be efficient, vandal-proof and adaptable in its application. Special dimmable drivers, able to work seamless with the BMS system, were integrated into all the fittings during manufacture. The luminaires were supplied with Ready2Mains drivers and controlled through the Ready2Mains Tridonic gateway system. Typically, intelligent lighting control requires control wires over and above the electrical supply wires. The technology used by RLS enables digital signals to be transmittedover themains voltage cables, whichmeans it is possible to handle manual dimming and scene control without the use of control wires. Luminaires are controlled and dimmed directly via the mains. Ready2mains allows for easy and cost-efficient refurbishment of luminaire installations with the lat- est dimmable LED technology. It is simple to install and provides the basis for cost-effective solutions: • Low-cost upgrade from non-dimmable installations to dimmable LED solutions. • Energy savings from simple integration of sensors and push-buttons by using the one4all interface (DALI, DSI, switchDIM, corridorFUNC- TION). • No need for rewiring in the ceilings. RLS worked closely with local Tridonic technical staff to set-up and commission the system and is proud to be the first to commission a ready2mains system at this scale. The company’s wide range of interior fittings enabled VDMMA to select complete families of products, which included variations in size, beam angles and applications. Down lighters with various lumen outputs and wattages integrated seamlessly into each area regardless of variations in ceiling height, room applications and fixing requirements. Custom solutions, including for slatted ceilings, were required on the interior of the project. Here RLS created a unique bracket that enabled access to the fitting for mounting and future maintenance. Regent Lighting Solutions are currently celebrating three decades of setting the standards of excellence in lighting solutions and pushing the limits of lighting design and technology. Whether they are creating light fittings, solving lighting solutions or simply providing expert customer service, their work is born from a desire to create solutions that enhance the lighting industry.
