holiday season. For malls, festive decor is a way to create a family-friendly atmosphere that appeals to holiday shoppers and captures their attention. The result is increased foot traffic, which translates into higher sales, benefiting both large retailers and smaller specialty stores. Mindful of environmental impacts, a quick search on the internet indicates that across South Africa malls have incorporated energy-efficient lighting into light displays in recent years. Adderley Street has adopted LED lights, which use less power and last longer than traditional incandescent bulbs, making the displays both eco-friendly and cost-effective. Many malls have also switched to LED lighting for their holiday decor, aligning their festive setups with sustainable practices and reinforcing a message of environmental responsibility. “Cape Town’s LED lights allow us to keep the holi day spirit bright while minimising energy consumption,” said a city spokesperson. “We’re committed to ensur ing that the festive season is celebrated sustainably.” This approach aligns with the city’s broader sustaina bility goals and reflects an effort to reduce the carbon footprint of public celebrations. Over the years, the Adderley Street lights have become more than just a festive display; they reflect Cape Town’s cultural diversity, with designs inspired by South African heritage, indigenous flora, and the Cape’s distinctive landscape. The lights capture a unique sense of place that resonates with locals and tourists alike, drawing crowds of families, friends, and visitors who gather to enjoy the festive cheer in an environment that celebrates Cape Town’s identity. For the thousands who attend each year, the lights represent a moment of unity, joy, and community spirit. The ongoing success of the Adderley Street lights, along with the popular holiday displays in malls, un derscores the economic and social importance of the festive season. From the bustling street vendors and local artisans to the large retail hubs, the lights and decorations serve as catalysts for a sense of shared celebration.

Each December, Cape Town’s Adderley Street trans forms into a vibrant corridor of festive lights, an event that has become as much a tradition as it is an eco nomic driver. The annual lighting ceremony, featuring a dazzling display of Christmas lights, draws thousands of locals and tourists, generating significant foot traffic for the area’s businesses and creating a ripple effect that extends to hospitality, tourism, and retail sectors across the Western Cape. The Adderley Street lights have become a hallmark of Cape Town’s summer season, attracting visitors keen to experience the festive atmosphere while ex ploring the city. For local restaurants, cafes, and shops along the street, the lights are an essential drawcard, helping to boost patronage during the holiday period. Not only do the lights encourage longer visits to the city centre, but they also increase spending in surrounding businesses, creating a welcome eco nomic lift. The switching-on ceremony is a major event on the city’s festive calendar, complete with live music, per formances, and stalls featuring local crafts and foods. For vendors, this occasion provides a vital opportunity to showcase their products and tap into a seasonal surge in demand. From handmade ornaments to street food and festive goods, the lights bring substantial commercial benefits to small businesses and artisans who rely on this annual burst of activity. The crowds drawn to Adderley Street each year support not only local enterprises but also create additional seasonal jobs, particularly in the hospitality and retail sectors. This employment spike benefits workers looking for extra income in the lead-up to the holidays, making the lights more than a festive fixture but a key economic contributor. While Adderley Street lights up the city centre, shopping malls across South Africa embrace the sea son with their own grand displays. Shopping centres invest significantly in holiday decor to attract visitors, turning malls into festive destinations. With Christmas trees, Santa’s grottos, and decora tive lighting installations, these malls create immersive holiday experiences that encourage shoppers to linger, browse, and ultimately spend. Retail experts point to a well-known strategy: the more time shoppers spend in-store, the more likely they are to make purchases, particularly around the

Illuminating the architecture Winelands Villa’s design is inspired by Provençal and Cape architectural traditions, featuring pitched roofs, timber rafters, and an earthy palette of timber cladding, off-shutter concrete, and natural stone. ARRCC’s layout of five interlocking squares

The villa’s central living space is a luminous core, framed by glass walls that slide into pockets to open up sweeping views of the Drakenstein and Simonsberg mountains. This integration of natural light creates a seamless flow from indoors to outdoors, making the living room feel like a pavilion, with views “flowing” through the space. By designing with

light and geometry in mind, ARRCC ensured that the villa’s architecture remains closely connected to its environment. Ambient light and open space Inside the villa, ARRCC’s lighting choices balance the lofty scale of the architecture with a sense of warmth and intimacy. The high, pitched ceiling in the lounge area draws the eye upward, accentuating the spacious double-volume entrance. Clerestory windows flood the lounge with daylight, creating an airy quality that resonates with the vast landscape beyond. ARRCC strategically used recessed lighting within the ceiling beams, softening the effect of the high ceilings while highlighting the natural textures of timber and concrete. These ambient lights frame the room without overpowering it, emphasising a sense of grounded luxury. The combination of natural and ambient lighting brings versatility to the space, accommodating both vibrant daytime gatherings and relaxed evening settings. Recessed spotlights and subtle up-lighting accentuate the natural beauty of the stone, creating a warm, inviting ambience that draws the eye to the fireplace as the heart of the home. ARRCC’s choice to complement this rustic feature with minimalist timber and screed flooring allows the textures to shine through, grounding the modern aesthetic with a sense of earthiness. Above, the timber-clad roof beams add a sleek twist to traditional exposed rafters, enhanced by directional lighting that accentuates the asymmetrical detailing of the pitched ceiling. This dynamic use of light helps soften the architectural lines while creating a more intimate, personal

Outdoor lighting The outdoor terraces and pool area echo the resort-like quality of the Winelands Villa, with lighting that transitions smoothly from day to night. A floating pool island is framed by soft perimeter lighting, creating a striking reflection in the water that adds depth and elegance to the pool area. Meanwhile, a long, sleek canopy extends over the terrace, equipped with integrated lighting that provides both shelter and ambience. The lighting here not only highlights the architectural lines but also frames the surrounding landscape, ensuring that the beauty of the environment remains a focal point even after sunset. Spa-like serenity In the master suite, ARRCC’s lighting design continues to enhance the home’s connection to nature. The ensuite bathroom is bathed in soft, diffused light, allowing for a relaxing, spa-like experience. Expansive windows frame views of the natural landscape, and carefully positioned task lighting near the mirrors ensures a functional yet gentle illumination. The lighting’s warm tones reflect off the neutral surfaces, creating a serene retreat that feels at once connected to nature and deeply personal. ARRCC’s Winelands Villa exemplifies how thoughtful lighting can transform a space, creating not only functional but emotionally resonant interiors. From the naturally lit central pavilion to the glowing stone textures and resort-like terraces, lighting is integral to the villa’s contemporary yet

timeless appeal. This harmonious play of light, material, and space demonstrates ARRCC’s ability to blend modern luxury with the tranquillity of the Cape Winelands. The main kitchen dually flows into the living room area and outdoor section, with 360 views of the surrounding mountains.

to kerosene lamps and candles. Ideal for various applications, from study lanterns to mobile torches, Sonnenglas Generation 6 features recycled glass, stainless steel and an innovative magnetic flip switch for easy and waterproof operation. Crafted in a Fair Trade factory in Johannesburg, South Africa, Sonnenglas combines advanced solar technology with ethical manufacturing, fostering social development and environmental sustainability. South African innovation Sonnenglas was founded in 2013 with the aim of providing a sustainable light source for communities affected by frequent power outages in South Africa. “Our mission was to create a product that not only harnesses solar energy but also promotes social impact. Starting with just 15 employees, we launched our fair-trade production in Johannesburg, producing our first lamps for the South African and European market,” says Anita Chenga, part of the marketing and communications team at Sonnenglas. What began as a solution to help those in off grid areas has grown into a symbol of sustainable design that’s beloved worldwide. “Our factory, located in the heart of Victoria Yards, Johannesburg, remains the centre of

responsibility,” she adds. Global recognition

Being longlisted in the Deezen Awards 2024 is a great honour for Sonnenglas. According to Chenga it’s a recognition of the efforts that have always been at the heart of the brand: the commitment to creating eco-friendly products that make a positive impact on both people and the planet. “As the first solar-powered lamp to be awarded the prestigious Blue Angel certification, we take immense pride in our commitment to sustainability, innovative technology, and eco-friendly design. Being longlisted validates the hard work that has gone into creating a product that serves more than a practical purpose. This motivates us to continue pushing boundaries and work on innovative solutions,” she says. Keeping it sustainable Sustainability is thought through every aspect of Sonnenglas. Solar modules store solar energy during the day and provide clean LED light in the evening, serving as an eco-friendly alternative to conventional lamps and candles, significantly reducing CO 2 emissions. “Our manufacturing facility also runs entirely on solar power, supported by 105 photovoltaic panels

generating 40 kW of energy, making our production in Johannesburg climate-neutral.” The facility takes great care in sourcing environmentally friendly and recycled materials wherever possible, and all suppliers must sign a strict code of conduct to prove that fairness and quality can go hand in hand in the electronics world. “One of many examples of this is our 100% guaranteed sustainable solder, which comes either from a guaranteed sustainable supply chain from certified producers in emerging countries or from high-purity secondary raw materials of European origin,” adds Chenga. This conscious selection not only ensures high-quality end products, but also protects people and the environment from the negative effects of conventional tin mining. “Furthermore, our “Trade Instead of Aid” philosophy supports sustainable employment in South Africa, offering fair wages and development opportunities, particularly for women in leadership positions. Our products contribute to 14 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), reinforcing our dedication to positive global impact,” she adds. The right design The Sonnenglas design philosophy revolves around simplicity, functionality, and environmental responsibility. “Our motto, ‘Sustainability by Design’ guides every step of our process. The Sonnenglas Solar Lantern is designed as a modular system, allowing individual parts to be replaced rather than discarding the entire product when a component wears out.” This approach reduces waste and extends the product’s lifespan. The modularity also ensures that customers can replace parts at a low cost, promoting sustainable consumption. “Our newest SOMO Gen6 solar module, reflects our philosophy of combining sustainability, innovation, and aesthetic appeal,” says Chenga. This module can be used across all products, reducing the need for additional purchases and encouraging a more thoughtful approach to

consumption. Beyond its functionality, Sonnenglas has also become a stylish element in homes and a trusted companion for outdoor activities such as camping and hiking. The impact of recognition The Dezeen Awards provide a platform to showcase how sustainability and good design can coexist beautifully. “This allows us to expand our reach globally, showing that eco-conscious choices can also be stylish and practical. It reinforces our belief in the growing demand for sustainable solutions and motivates us to continue developing products that make a meaningful difference worldwide,” concludes Chenga. Fusing Africa, Scandinavia and America at Hav & Mar in New York Nestled within the iconic Starrett-Lehigh building in Chelsea, New York, Hav & Mar is a striking new addition to the city’s dining landscape. Conceived by acclaimed designer Atelier Zébulon Perron and chef Marcus Samuelsson, this multicultural restaurant celebrates the harmonious blend of diverse cultural influences. C hef Samuelsson, an Ethiopian-born, Swedish-raised chef, brings together African, Scandinavian, and American flavours in a bold culinary narrative that echoes his life story. partnership for the Marcus Restaurant at Montreal’s Four Seasons Hotel set a high bar, and Hav & Mar builds on that foundation. Together, they envisioned an interior that goes beyond mere aesthetics to foster social connection, bringing people together in a warm, inviting space.

The restaurant’s name, Hav & Mar – derived from the Swedish word for “sea” and the Amharic word for “honey” – captures this blend, promising a dining experience rooted in both tradition and exploration. Since its opening in late 2022, Hav & Mar has quickly gained a reputation for its globally inspired menu, vibrant with festive and rich flavours. A reimagined collaboration This isn’t the first time Samuelsson and Atelier Zébulon Perron have collaborated. Their previous

“Diversity and a meeting of cultures is at the heart of Hav & Mar,” says Zébulon Perron, founder of the design atelier. “From Derek Adams’ mermaid-inspired logo to the leadership of talented women of colour, this restaurant embodies the richness of multicultural identity.” Atelier Zébulon Perron is known for its inventive approach to commercial spaces, creating environments that enhance social interaction within challenging floorplans. For Hav & Mar, the team reconfigured the previously industrial space,

drawing on plywood as a foundational material to bring warmth and comfort, softened by custom furnishings and vintage accents. The firm’s goal was to establish a layout that flows naturally, encouraging interaction and ease for diners. Embracing industrial charm With materials like velvety walnut, raw stucco, and polished concrete, Hav & Mar’s interior reflects its industrial roots while welcoming patrons with a plush, sophisticated edge. Plywood panelling, intricate booth enclosures, and wall assemblies showcase the material’s versatility, infusing the restaurant with a distinct character. Perron’s team balanced these textures with contemporary lighting, created in partnership with Lambert & Fils, which adds depth and drama to the space. The palette mixes earthy browns and honey tones with bright marble, including a striking teal bar top, creating an atmosphere that feels both international and timeless. Plush velvets and fine hardwoods contrast beautifully against raw surfaces, bringing the story of the building’s

industrial past to life in a chic, approachable way. Functional flow Central to the design is Hav & Mar’s open kitchen, which invites guests to engage with the culinary process. Positioned in front of the kitchen, the main bar serves as a hub of activity, while a canopy like lighting fixture, reminiscent of a sea creature, floats overhead, bringing a human scale to the vast space below. This whimsical addition grounds the bar and makes it an intimate focal point in an expansive room. In the spirit of functional elegance, a private booth near the bar and kitchen was transformed into a prime dining space, converting a potentially overlooked corner into one of the most sought-after spots in the restaurant. The verticality of the design is heightened by sculptural lighting fixtures, which cast a warm, curated glow across the room, each fixture adding dimension to the varied textures of the restaurant. Lighting as a sculptural art form Atelier Zébulon Perron’s creative lighting is a standout feature, infusing each corner of Hav & Mar with a unique atmosphere. As Zébulon Perron notes, “You can create the most beautiful spaces imaginable, but lighting is what infuses life into them.” Custom-designed fixtures serve both as artwork and as lighting, creating glowing, sculptural forms that draw the eye. With its seamless blend of Samuelsson’s culinary vision and Perron’s design expertise, Hav & Mar is a testament to the power of multicultural convergence. From the earthy palette to the creatively lit spaces, Hav & Mar promises a dining experience that’s as much about the ambiance as it is about the flavours – a space where culture, community, and creativity unite. BayArena prepares for Champions League with cutting-edge LEDVANCE lighting

In an ambitious bid to enhance both fan experience and sustainability standards, BayArena, home to Bayer 04 Leverkusen, has introduced a revolutionary new lighting system in partnership with LEDVANCE.

I n line with UEFA Elite Level A lighting requirements for Champions League fixtures, the stadium has been equipped with state-of the-art LED floodlights. The system promises not only to meet broadcasting demands but also to reflect the club’s eco-friendly ethos. A new standard for stadium lighting Bayer 04 Leverkusen, reigning Bundesliga champions, recognised the need to ensure BayArena’s facilities were as exceptional as the club’s on-pitch performance. With Champions League matches on the horizon, the club set out to upgrade its lighting to meet the latest UEFA specifications and provide crystal clear visibility for spectators both in the stadium and at home. Working with LEDVANCE, the team created a bespoke lighting solution that achieves the high brightness required for football while enhancing the quality of illumination across the venue. “Our aim was to surpass the typical standards,” commented Thomas Fobbe, Territory Head for LEDVANCE in the DACH region. “This project sets a new benchmark in sports lighting, merging cutting-edge quality with sustainability, and we are proud to have partnered with Bayer 04 Leverkusen to accomplish this.” Blending sustainability with innovation The new lighting system goes beyond the pitch, representing a significant stride in Bayer 04 Leverkusen’s commitment to sustainability. By selecting LED technology, BayArena has greatly reduced its energy consumption, contributing to a lower carbon footprint. The LEDs not only deliver high-quality light but also have a long lifespan, which reduces maintenance and makes operations more efficient. “With LEDVANCE as a key sustainability partner, we’re on course to make all club buildings eco-friendly,” noted Felix Duden, Managing Director of TecArena-Plus GmbH. “Our new floodlight system supports our long-term vision of equipping the entire club with environmentally responsible lighting solutions, setting an example for future stadiums.”

Technical precision and customisa tion The newly installed floodlights are arranged in rings under the stadium’s roof, requiring meticulous planning and installation. Each light was individually lifted and secured by climbers due to the intricate placement of the outer ring. This layout ensures even light distribution across the pitch, optimising visibility for players and audiences. The lighting system consists of 324 inner-ring floodlights, complemented by 60 Quattro luminaires designed for stand lighting. These Quattro luminaires combine white and RGB LED chips, allowing for colourful light shows that enhance the atmosphere. Each light is controllable, giving BayArena the ability to create dynamic lighting effects instantly, adjusting from high-brightness for play to more subdued hues for pre- and post match displays. Lighting beyond the field Alongside the high-intensity floodlights, additional fixtures are designed to enhance the overall experience within the stadium. Each of the 36 roof segments features a set of four RGB and one red-only FL Arena floodlights, all of which are programmable to adapt to different lighting scenes. These lights ensure that the atmosphere remains vibrant throughout the game, creating a visual spectacle for fans. The lighting system is powered by carefully installed cables, including DMX lines, allowing precise control over each fixture. With the touch of a button, BayArena’s lighting engineers can adjust intensity, switch colours, and add lighting effects to create a unique, immersive experience. This capability not only meets UEFA’s strict requirements but also offers creative options for memorable lighting displays. For LEDVANCE and Bayer 04 Leverkusen, this project is more than a technical achievement; it is a shared commitment to delivering a high-quality, sustainable experience for fans and players alike. As Champions League fixtures approach, the stadium stands as a testament to the impact of innovative and responsible design in sports. Enquiries: www.ledvance.com

Ellis Park is lit and ready for rugby spectators

The Urban East area of Johannesburg had undergone a remarkable transformation when City of Johannesburg prepared for one of the most anticipated international rugby test matches in recent years since the Springboks’ narrow victory against Argentina at this venue in July 2023.

Johannesburg’s capacity to host a world-class event,” du Preez noted. Revitalising the Urban East Precinct As part of the regeneration plan, Jozi My Jozi coordinated the installation of over 380 solar lights across the precinct, enhancing nighttime visibility and increasing safety for residents and visitors alike. With the expertise of landscaper Greg Straw and his teams, the organisation managed the precinct’s placemaking and beautification efforts, transforming the area’s appeal. The revitalisation didn’t end there. Jozi My Jozi also undertook repairs on potholes, pavement fixes, and street art installations to enhance the area’s aesthetic. Increased street cleaning and a strong law enforcement presence bolstered the revitalisation initiative, ensuring an inviting and safe environment for everyone. Du Preez was optimistic about the impact of these changes: “We wanted the stadium and surrounding area to be a recognised attraction in the inner city, ready to host spectacular international events. Visitors would witness these improvements and, hopefully, spread the word.” Improved transport and accessibil ity A collaborative effort among Johannesburg’s transport services enabled fans to travel seamlessly to the stadium, while organisers encouraged the use of public transport to avoid congestion. The standout initiative was the partnership between Gautrain and PRASA, offering free transfers for match ticketholders from Gautrain’s Park Station to Ellis Park Station – a swift ten minute journey with a train departing every 15 minutes. Park and Ride services from 13 shopping centres across the city also contributed to accessibility, while designated areas for drop-offs and pick-ups with e-hailing services streamlined the fan experience. Law enforcement and traffic control teams worked to ensure smooth movement around the

E mirates Airline Park, the iconic 60,000 seat stadium, was the centrepiece of this regeneration, hosting the much-anticipated showdown between the Springboks and the All Blacks. With the fervour of the haka, the excitement of the fans, and millions of viewers worldwide, the improvements in Urban East were bound to leave a lasting impression. Stephen du Preez, founder of LocalAbode and the Jozi My Jozi project lead for the Urban East District Alliance, spoke of the powerful public private partnership driving these efforts. “It’s incredible to see how the City of Joburg, the Jozi My Jozi movement, the Lions Rugby Union, stadium management, and several corporates and organisations came together, working tirelessly to bring about this much-needed facelift. This event provided an ideal opportunity to showcase

stadium precinct, prioritising the safety of all attendees, residents, and visitors. A collaborative effort for a lasting legacy Irene Mafune, Regional Director of CRUM Region F, highlighted the significance of partnerships with the University of Johannesburg and Johannesburg Central College Ellis Park campus, emphasising the city’s commitment to addressing local service delivery issues. City Power tackled faulty streetlights and underground cables, Pikitup managed litter and illegal dumping sites, and Johannesburg Water repaired burst pipes and restored manhole covers. City Parks trimmed trees and cleared roots, while the Johannesburg Development Agency cleaned the Joe Slovo bridge, and the Johannesburg Roads Agency filled potholes and repainted road markings. “This precinct holds great significance because of our active partnerships, particularly with the University of Johannesburg and Johannesburg Central College. We are committed to effectively addressing service delivery issues and upholding infrastructure standards,” Mafune said. Du Preez echoed the sentiment, saying, “Seeing what’s possible when diverse groups work towards a common goal is truly inspiring. This isn’t just a one-day event; the area will continue to be maintained, well-lit, and secure thanks to our partnership with the City of Joburg and all its stakeholders.” Reflecting on the efforts, he added, “As we rally behind the Bokke, dressed in green and gold, it’s the days, weeks, and months that follow that will testify to all the hard work and dedication we’ve put in. Braving the river with innovative lighting at canoe museum Lightemotion transforms architectural spaces into multisensory environments, making experiences like shopping, dining, or museum visits memorable and engaging. N ow, this renowned lighting design consul tancy, known for enhancing human expe riences, proudly introduces its contribution

project, which highlights Canadian heritage and living history,” says François Roupinian, President and Design Director of Lightemotion. “The Canadian Canoe Museum is a love letter to our nation, and we aimed to convey the human connections behind each of its inanimate objects.” For over 25 years, the Canadian Canoe Museum has housed the world’s largest collection of canoes, evolving from a community project to a world-class museum. Its new premises, which opened on 13 May, include two 1,850-square metre floors, dedicated to showcasing canoes through thoughtfully curated exhibits detailing their histories. “This project was many years in the making, and we were fortunate to work closely with the clients from the start,” adds Roupinian. “This allowed us to fully grasp the significance of each vessel, particularly in relation to Canada’s Indigenous history.” A non-conventional approach Breaking away from traditional museum lighting, Lightemotion adopted a theatrical, immersive, and sensory approach. It was essential to convey the emotions and craftsmanship behind each canoe, creating a lighting system that immerses visitors in the experience. Lightemotion introduced a layered lighting technique, staging objects in ways that capture their defining elements, be it engravings, wood grain, or canoe shape. “If you simply light an object in its entirety, it can end up resembling a generic store display,” explains Roupinian. “By focusing on specific details directionally, the object can evoke emotional responses.” Each canoe is illuminated to suggest a sense of movement while highlighting its unique features with sculptural light angles. Like an arrow in flight, a closer look reveals the detailed craftsmanship behind each piece. Immersed in a dream Lightemotion aimed to create a dreamlike atmosphere with lighting that emanates from the ground up. They developed a system of small ground lights with targeted caches, effectively detaching the canoes from one another and

to the new home of the Canadian Canoe Museum on Little Lake’s waterfront in Peterborough, On tario. As part of a CA$45 million project to build a two-storey, 6,000-square-metre space, Lighte motion was commissioned to breathe life into the museum’s historic display of Canadian heritage. “We are proud to be part of this significant

creating an immersive environment for each display. Similarly, lighting enhances graphic elements that narrate each canoe’s backstory, using simple LED strips to bathe the banners in light and create a 3D effect, allowing the canoes to ‘float’ separately. This combination builds a theatrical atmosphere while preserving museological detail. “You feel part of each scene, surrounded by the individual displays and breathing in their essence,” describes Roupinian. “While the overall effect is theatrical, each detail remains vivid and easily identifiable.” The value of close collaboration Lightemotion joined the Canadian Canoe Museum (CCM) project during the initial design phase, conducting studies and creating a schematic design for GSM Project. During the COVID pandemic, they resumed work as the project advanced into the design development phase. “The directors worked tirelessly for years to secure funding for this project, and we were committed to delivering a lighting system that would be both spectacular and budget-conscious,” summarises Roupinian. “Part of that success came from working with fantastic local teams from the Peterborough area, making it a labour of love for all involved.” Lightemotion’s artisanal approach produced an intricate lighting system worthy of this heritage project, crafted with a magical touch that has earned the company international acclaim. Designed to a human scale, the lighting is set to

create immersive experiences for an estimated 87,000 annual visitors. “Each of these canoes was handcrafted, symbolising a profound connection between humanity, nature, and the canoe,” concludes Roupinian. “Each one was originally a labour of love, and our lighting aims to convey these powerful bonds.” Enquiries: www.lightemotion.ca
