Ellis Park is lit and ready for rugby spectators

The Urban East area of Johannesburg had undergone a remarkable transformation when City of Johannesburg prepared for one of the most anticipated international rugby test matches in recent years since the Springboks’ narrow victory against Argentina at this venue in July 2023.

Revitalising the Urban East Precinct As part of the regeneration plan, Jozi My Jozi coordinated the installation of over 380 solar lights across the precinct, enhancing nighttime visibility and increasing safety for residents and visitors alike. With the expertise of landscaper Greg Straw and his teams, the organisation managed the precinct’s placemaking and beautification efforts, transforming the area’s appeal. The revitalisation didn’t end there. Jozi My Jozi also undertook repairs on potholes, pavement fixes, and street art installations to enhance the area’s aesthetic. Increased street cleaning and a strong law enforcement presence bolstered the revitalisation initiative, ensuring an inviting and safe environment for everyone. Du Preez was optimistic about the impact of these changes: “We wanted the stadium and surrounding area to be a recognised attraction in the inner city, ready to host spectacular international events. Visitors would witness these improvements and, hopefully, spread the word.” Improved transport and accessibil ity A collaborative effort among Johannesburg’s transport services enabled fans to travel seamlessly to the stadium, while organisers encouraged the use of public transport to avoid congestion. The standout initiative was the partnership between Gautrain and PRASA, offering free transfers for match ticketholders from Gautrain’s Park Station to Ellis Park Station – a swift ten minute journey with a train departing every 15 minutes. Park and Ride services from 13 shopping centres across the city also contributed to accessibility, while designated areas for drop-offs and pick-ups with e-hailing services streamlined the fan experience. Law enforcement and traffic control teams worked to ensure smooth movement around the

With the fervour of the haka, the excitement of the fans, and millions of viewers worldwide, the improvements in Urban East were bound to leave a lasting impression. Stephen du Preez, founder of LocalAbode and the Jozi My Jozi project lead for the Urban East District Alliance, spoke of the powerful public private partnership driving these efforts. “It’s incredible to see how the City of Joburg, the Jozi My Jozi movement, the Lions Rugby Union, stadium management, and several corporates and organisations came together, working tirelessly to bring about this much-needed facelift.
