Goud Street in Johannesburg Upgraded

The works include: • Upgraded sidewalks • Installation of new public lighting • New stormwater systems • New street furniture, including bins and benches • Installation of street trees The JDA aimed to deliver this public infrastructure project using labour-intensive methods, focusing on job creation and income generation through an Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) approach. A total of seven SMMEs participated in the project, with an SMME expenditure of R6 million. JDA CEO Themba Mathibe stated: “The successful upgrade of Goud Street reflects our commitment to revital ising Johannesburg’s inner city by creating spaces that are not only functional but also enhance the quality of life for residents, businesses, and visitors.” “The transformation of this key area into a vibrant, pedes trian-friendly environment exemplifies our vision of fostering economic growth and urban renewal while honouring the rich heritage of our city,” he noted.

Goud Street, located in the inner city of Johannesburg’s Central Business District (CBD), has undergone a signif icant upgrade to create a high-quality environment with enhanced pedestrian appeal. The street now features wider sidewalks, pedestrian lighting, landscaping, trees, and natural elements. The Inner-City Core Public Environment Upgrades (PEUs) for Goud Street mark the latest improvement com pleted by the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) in the Gandhi Square East Precinct. Gandhi Square has become both a popular tourist attraction and a bustling hub of commercial and retail activity, well-served by public transport options, including buses, taxis, and the Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. Located in Ward 124, Goud Street spans 0.98 km and is home to the Downtown Music Hub, a landmark recording facility first opened in 1979 and now recognised as part of the city’s heritage. The R15 million Goud Street PEUs were part of the Gandhi Square East Precinct Urban Development Frame work and align with the City’s plans to invest over R800 million in capital projects within Region F, which includes the inner city.
