KML bearings from BI a perfect fit for food-and-beverage applications

Innovative scrolled design for centrifuge Knownforitsrobustconstruction, theSiebtechnik Conturbex screen scroll centrifuge offers ease of operation due to its ability to absorb process variations. Its scrolled or wormed design is well proven in solid liquid separation applications, across a broad spectrum of industries. The centrifuge comprises a drive component located in the bearing house, a drum that holds the screen in place, a scroll that transports the product across the basket and a housing to en- close the rotating parts. The innovative design of the centrifuge has the inlet scroll turning in the same direction as the screen drum, but at a small differential speed. This ensures uniform acceleration of solids and eliminates imbalances indewatering applications. The transport screen scroll also acts as a con- trol mechanismby regulating the sliding speed of the solids as well as the retention time. Vibration isolation of the bearing housing from the struc- tural steel support is achieved using rubber buf- fers.Theseeliminate95%ofalldynamicloadsthat would be transmitted to the support structure. The Siebtechnik Conturbex screen scroll centrifuge is available from Multotec, and the large South African installed based is supported by a technical team that offers process solution information. Acomprehensiveparts stockholding is maintained, and refurbishment of units is also undertaken at Multotec’s Spartan facilities. www.multotec.com

The KML range of corrosion-resistant, food-grade ball bearings, distributed exclusively in Southern Africa by leading supplier BI, continues to set the quality and hygiene benchmark in the food-and- beverage industry. Withover 35years’ experience inpow- er transmission, KML Bearings has devel- oped a high level of technical competence as a leading international manufacturer of high-quality bearing products, which is why BI is proud to be the company’s local distribution partner. KML bearings are filled with FDA- and HACCP-approved Mobil FM22 food- grade grease, while the insert bearings are made from 440C stainless steel for optimum raceway and ball bearing heat- treatment hardening. The flingers and retainers are made from 304 grade stain- less steel for high corrosion resistance. All housing units have smooth surfaces that can be cleaned easily with high-pres- sure washing equipment. The housings include stainless steel sleeves for fixing bolts and stainless steel grease fittings. BI Agriculture Product Manager Ger hard Pienaar explains that KML’s ther- moplastic and stainless steel mounted food-processing bearings have been designed specifically todeal with frequent washing, contaminants, exposure toclean- ing agents, and constant temperature changes. “Food-and-beverage processing ma- chinery is the most challenging for bear-

ing-unit performance. However, the KML housings more than meet the specific re- quirementsformaterialsusedinfood-and- beverage equipment,” Pienaar assures. KMLoffers two types ofmountedunits forthefood-and-beverageindustry,name- ly standard composite and thermoplastic units. The mounted composite housings resistcorrosionfromprocessingchemicals and frequentwashings. Theunits alsohave greater shock resistance than typical cast iron, comprising high-grade glass-filled thermoplastic polyester. In addition, they are interchangeable with conventional cast-iron housings. The thermoplastic units are mainte- nance-free, withhighmechanical strength and stability. The smooth surfaces are more hygienic than cast-iron housings, where the rougher surfaces may harbour harmful dirt, mould, or bacteria. www.bearings.co.za KML bearings are filled with FDA- and HACCP- approved Mobil FM22 food-grade grease, while the insert bearings are made from 440C stainless steel.

At an event on Friday November 2 at its Johannesburg head office, Yaskawa Southern Africa’s Berg & Bush team pre- sented a cheque for R40 000 to each of its two chosen charities: Get upWoman and the Kitty and Puppy Haven. Making up the four-man sponsored team were Yaskawa Southern Africa’s MD, Kurt Rosenberg, who was joined by AndrewCrackett, national sales manager fromthe JohannesburgHeadOffice, Sean Low, Durban branch manager, and Sean Irwin from Productive Engineering, the Cape Town-based Yaskawa agency. In total, R80 000 was raised with the generous support from Yaskawa part- ners and clients, most notably: Axelent, Varispeed, SKSWelding Systems andDale Automation, whose logos were promi- nently displayed on the team’s riding gear.
