Modern Quarrying Q3 2018

Top ISHE performers – individuals In the ISHE individual awards category, Aspasa recognised top performing individuals for outstand- ing performances. Alfred Mkhonza of Afrimat Harrismith; Donald Tsotetsi of AfriMat Qwa Qwa; and Michael Mutwanamba of Raumix Aggregates were the winners of the Health & Safety Representative for 2017 award. The award recog- nises “those who work in the grime as the eyes and ears of the mine manager” to support the manager in achieving the required results and performance as the health & safety representative of the operation. Four other individuals were recognised with the Health & Safety Management award for outstanding commitment. These are Johann Pretorius of Raumix Aggregates; Quintin van der Merwe of SPH Kundalila; Elton Goosen of Lafarge KZN; and Brian Wevell of Afrimat KZN & Freestate. “This category recognises safety managers for their outstanding commitment,” explains Van Deventer. “This is not only com- mitment to their own company, but also towards Aspasa, the work that’s being done in different operations, regional committees and atten- dance to the committee meetings, workshops and audits.” Meanwhile, consultants Paul Chamen and Ronelle Affinand of NOSHCON, walked away winners of the Health & Safety Service Provider Excellence award. Van Deventer explains that quite often operations use consultants or health & safety service providers to help them develop and implement health & safety systems. A major benefit of going this route is that the opera- tion has an independent person to do inspections and audits, which maximises excellence. “The service providers have been recognised for going the extra mile by becoming part of the team to ensure performance excellence,” says Van Deventer. The biggest gong of the night in the individual category of the ISHE awards went to Anton Marnewick of Afrimat Freestate, who was awarded the Best Operations Manager for 2017 accolade. “Marnewick is the mine manager of two Afrimat

judged on the same criteria as any other Aspasa member and it is often quite difficult for these operations to compete with their corporate-owned counterparts,” says Van Deventer. Two operations – Lafarge Polokwane and SPH Kundalila Pilanesburg – won the Best Improved Operations awards for 2017. The criteria used for the nom- ination is not only the improvement in the actual score obtained during the audits, but also the improve- ments made in the implementation of the documentation of the health & safety system, development of the quarry itself and the improvements in the plant. Aggregates Crushco were the three operations recognised for showing good improvements during 2017 in a sustainable way, demonstrating high performance standards. Meanwhile Eskay Crushers, AfriSam Verulam and Raumix

The Top Performing Operation in the ISHE Audits in 2017 was AfriSam Newcastle with a score of 97,06%. This is the fourth consecutive year the operation has won the Top Performer award in Aspasa’s ISHE Audits. Together with Afrimat Harrismith, which achieved a 95,79% score, AfriSam Newcastle also scooped the award for consistency in achieving Showplace for five years running. “This award honours members that consistently achieve Showplace Status. This is where operations achieve audit scores of 95% and higher for at least five years,” explains Van Deventer. Midmar Crushers, with a total score of 95,73%, won the Top Independent Performer for 2017 award, achieving the honour for the second year running. “Independent operations are also
