LIGHTING

REDUCING TOTAL ENERGY COSTS P ostNord, the largest logistics company in Sweden and Denmark, continuously works to optimise its energy consumption and

LED is about more than just saving money “Energy renovation is about more than just chang- ing to energy efficient LED light sources. Of course, saving energy means a lot, and in that respect the product’s longevity, price and quality are impor- tant factors. But, the product must also ensure the right lighting conditions,” said Michael Hansson of Kvalitek. “Ledvance’s LED luminaires have proven their worth. They are of high quality, but they also have a low mounting height of only two centimetres, which makes them easy and less expensive to install. This has a great impact on the total installation price and thus overall savings.” The luminaires double the lux level and, with

reduced power consumption, offer more lighting for the same price. Furthermore, the employees in the warehouse are very enthusiastic about the new and improved lighting, especially during night shifts. LED luminaires also omit less heat than older lights, and PostNord has been able to turn off the coolers, which in itself has given notable savings on the total energy account. Changing 1200 lights in the Broendby Pakkecenter has achieved an annual saving of EUR 94,000.

REGENT LIGHTS NO-FEE SCHOOL OF EXCELLENCE bring down CO 2 emissions. The company has just completed a project which showcases the massive global change from conventional lighting to LED lighting. As part of an ambitious environmental strategy to reduce CO 2 emissions by 40 percent before 2020 (compared to 2009), PostNord has completed a large energy renovation project in a central packing facility in the town of Broendby, in Copenhagen. Offices, warehouses, and outdoor areas have been upgraded to improve lighting, and reduce total energy costs. Over the past number of years, the lighting sector has seen a rapid transition from traditional technologies such as halogen to LED solutions. LEDs are not only more energy efficient and longer lasting, but the unit price has fallen, which means more companies can reap significant savings by changing to LED products of high quality. In 2015, LED luminaires amounted to 15 percent of the total lighting market, up from five percent in 2010 and, according to Boston Consulting Group, the market share will reach 45 percent in 2020. One of the biggest growth areas within the lighting sector is the market for standardised LED luminaires with tightly integrated, non- exchangeable LED light sources. PostNord has a structured approach to analysing energy consumption and optimisation. Mounted bio-meters on all locations pinpoint economic savings and while the company previously had advisors and project managers in-house, it has outsourced this role to Kvalitek. It was Kvalitek which undertook the massive assignment of changing all conventional lighting to energy- efficient LED luminaires in PostNord’s packing centre – an assignment that included warehouses, production areas, offices, toilets, a cafeteria, kitchen, and outdoor areas. T he Jakes Gerwel Technical (JGT) High School, a modern two-stream technical school with cutting edge eLearning facilities in Bonnievale, Western Cape, is a project imple- mented out of the need for more than 1200 chil- dren from poor households in Bonnievale and rural surrounding farm schools to have the opportunity to pursue a secondary school education. Most learn- ers at the school, which is fully inclusive to anyone from any background, come from under-resourced households and broken family structures, and the school’s first priority is to invest in the character of the learners through mentorship. A collaboration between the JGE Funding Trust and the Western Cape Education Department, JGT is a first for South Africa. Never before has a community worked together on such a scale to collaborate with government to create a school of such a standard and comprehensive offering of both technical vocational and technical occupational curricula. The Western Cape Minister of Education, Min. Debbie Schäfer, announced the school in parliament, describing it as “awe-inspiring”. Regent Lighting, working with Thymlees Architectural Design, Motla Consulting and REC Electrical Contractors, was part of this remarkable project and supplied new Argo, Luxon 600x600, Luxon round interior fittings, the Lugo, Large Inground Mite and the Solo bulkhead on the exterior walls.
